Default 04 wrx, ppp upgrade on horizon what about the brakes???!

ok so im on the brink of having the ppp fitted although the thought of parting with 1300 quid just before x mas is killing me. My question is do i need to uprate the brakes, mine are due a replacement shortly so was going to tie in with the ppp. Also having just watched wheeler dealers doing up a Y plate they fitted the 330mm brembos but had to change the wheels :-( its never easy is it!! i have the standard wheels but had them changed from gold to black so am a little put off replacing them aswell not to mention the cost of it all!!

Please help any and all advice greatly appreciated

I would say brembo upgrade is very good but you need sti wheels, but when you take into account selling your old brakes and wheels is a very cost effective upgrade, I found it really improved the braking on my wrx, 2nd option if you want to keep your wheels is either godspeed larger front discs with brackets to move your calipers out to suit, this is sold as a complete bolt on kit, failing that some have used wheel spacers to fit brembos under wrx rims, but I would not do that myself.
But if you forget about the ppp and just fit an exhaust, panel filter, intercooler hose and an openecu remap, you will easily get more power than a ppp and should have enough money left to upgrade your brakes as well. after all the main reason for fitting a ppp is to retain warranty, but as yours is already out of warranty there are far cheaper ways to achieve ppp performance. My wrx ended up being ppp spec, by sourcing used parts and had a brembo front brake upgrade and sti wheels, the whole lot cost far less than the ppp pack from subaru, and I was pleased with the results.

I've had 2 PPP cars, the current one has been remapped, Milltek exhaust and Walbro fuel pump. Its far more responsive now than with just PPP and probably cost less for more power. as far as brakes, I went for DBA Wiperslot discs, DS2500 pads, DOT 5.1 fluid and braided hoses. Rears are fitted with Ian Godney's grooved discs together with kevlar pads. Not cheap, but no fade or additional noise. Bob

A decent set of discs and pads will go a long way. Braided lines also a worthwhile upgrade.

We can set you up with a decent set of discs and pads for under £200, but depending on your requirements this could be as low as £70.

Beyond just discs/pad you'll be looking at changing calipers etc and need to budget £600+ (eg K-Sport 8 Pots + decent pads).

It all depends on your budget.

Hi
The standard subaru 4 pot calipers you have fitted as standard are a good caliper , the problem as standard is they are on a too small a disc to get the best out of them with standard discs and pads fitted , then up your power and as standard they will struggle to cope.

You can make them work better by fitting better discs and pads , I offer a first step up from standard of grooved discs with painted centres to stop them going rusty , and our kevlar pads , which are basically the first step up from standard , so work perfect from cold , are quiet , and will take more heat than a standard pad when pressing on , these are £99 a set inc VAT and plus £12.50 P&P.

The next step up from there for the harder driver is to fit a better pad , the pads that have impressed me over the last few months are the brand new EBC bluestuff pads , we can offer our grooved discs with the painted centres and bluestuff pads for £199 inc VAT plus £12.50 P&P.

From then , for people who like to use the car to its fullest , or if you plan on doing track days , we offer our 335mm kit , the kit consist of 2 piece grooved discs and anodised alloy bells , mounting brackets and caliper fitting kit , and larger than standard pads , the pads are the same length as a standard pad , but is about 15mm wider so you get a lot more pad material onto the disc , we have had this shape pad made for us in the new bluestuff compound.
By fitting much larger diameter discs you are effectively giving the calipers more leverage on the discs , this coupled with the subaru 4 pot calipers makes a huge difference in braking power , along with the discs being a lot thicker they can also take a lot more heat , we have tested this kit on a race track along with the AP 330mm kits we sell and the braking was near identical , for a like for like kit , this kit can hold its own against anything on the market
We offer the 335mm kit for £550 inc VAT , and this kit will fit behind your standard WRX 17" wheels and retains your standard subaru 4 pot calipers.

We make this kit in house , none of our stuff are cheap imports from China , and as we are so confident in the quality of our parts , we offer a 12 month guarantee against warping and defects even if you do track days.

Just about everything we offer is in stock for a next day delivery , and we also offer a fitting service as we have full garage facilities

Hope this helps in deciding what stage your looking for in upgrading your brakes , if you have any further question please ask ,

Cheers Ian

Throwing this out there as an alternative to a PPP on a WRX.

I have a WRX running a Green panel filter (£40) and prodrive exhaust (£350). Getting 240bhp on VPower. I have been told for a £750 remap i will be getting 265bhp+. Cheaper than a PPP (just about). I have already upgraded to EBC on the front.

I have had StopTech 330mm on the front of my 03 WRX, that was bloody good but I left the rears standard so I did have problems with the rear of the car trying to overtake the front on heavy breaking! LOL. Then I went back to OEM front (very long story) with PAgid Blue pads and still kept standard rears. This was fine for my driving but a definite difference. Now I have EBC Ultimax discs all round and as part of Andy's trial for EBC I had Redstuff pads all round as a trial. I can tell the difference for the better now the rears match the fronts as regards pads and discs. My car brakes very well, HOWEVER, the Reds are not a track pad. For me they are good enough for my MAIN type of driving and part thrash thrown in. So, think very carefully what you will use your car for, and only then make your move, there is a lot of money to be wasted if you make a wrong choice when you dont need it. I feel for normal to fast road, good discs and uprated pads is good enough. I found a lot of the time my StopTech pads were not up to it as they never got hot enough and as such glazed over regularly, giving me no real benefit over anything else. With pads like the new EBC Bluestuff, if you match those with good grooved discs I think you will have a superb setup for any kind of driving.
Even Yellowstuff pads would be good in the new compound from this year.

Seems dear for just a re-map, whereabouts you based?

Hi Aztec, the quote was around 550 + VAT + rolling road which is around 750. I am near London. Are you Yeovil? DO you offer a remap service?
