I think that this is b*ll*cks. I understand that if the nail or whatever goes through the sidewall or shoulder then it can't be repaired since it can damage the metal bands which run around the sidewalls. I think that if the damage is in the centre of the tyre then it can be safely plugged/patched.

Get a second opinion. Failing that, I think that Toyos have a warranty which means that you may be entitled to a percent refund depending on the amount of tread remaining. I'm not sure about the details or whether you're covered for nails, etc through the tyre.

Some "FastFit" type places "repair" punctures by sticking a tube in the tyre. With very low profile tyres there isn't enough room to do that so they may tell you you that the tyre can't be repaired. As far as I'm aware, a proper vulcanised repair is possible whatever the speed rating. You can even get repairs if the damage is on the shoulder of the tyre - but that is a very specialised job which very few repairers can do.

The speed rating would only be an issue with their repair methods. I had 3 of my original Pirelli P-Zero's repaired; they they were all the original tyres supplied with the car and last 20K miles without any problems. I even had one of the tyres repaired twice

I asked if the repair would affect the tyre (i.e. could I drive just as quickly) and was told that the repair had no effect.

It's only if the sidewall has been damaged that repairs can't be made.

I had one of my old P-zeros repaired, the guy fitted a patch about 6" square, it did 6000 miles and 2 trackdays like that, never lost any air.

I had the same prob with one of my 17" Toyo T1,s. Within a week of having them fitted, I ended up with a screw sticking out one of the fronts. Moving the screw caused air to leak out so it was all the way through. I took it down to my local tyre dealer and they stated that as long as there was no damage to the metal banding they would be able to repair it. Luckily the tyre was repaired. I have since covered 9000 miles and have had no problems.

- Came out to find a flat Toyo (16") and a screw stuck in it this afternoon.

- Took it to local Fast Fit type place. Guy says it can be repaired because it is in the middle not on the shoulder (tyre still has quite a lot of tread)

- Get it up on the ramps, take a seat in the waiting room and guy comes back and says they can't do the normal repair due to the speed rating and that it would need major work done and that I could get a new tyre for not a lot more.

- Is this right and anyone know why??

- I am guessing that the repair would not be strong/safe enough at the speeds that the tyre is capable of and therefore the garage is not allowed to do it? Thought I'd get some ideas before I shelled out for a new one.

Kwik-Fit will repair any car or light van tyre FREE OF CHARGE*

* The following conditions apply to this service:

1. Kwik-Fit will only repair punctures within the repair area as shown in the diagram.



2. The tyre must also have a minimum legal tread depth of 1.6mm and the puncture must not exceed 6mm in diameter.

3. Tyres with a speed rating of "S", "T", "H" or "V" must have no more than 2 existing repairs whilst "Z" or "W" rated tyres must have no more than one.

4. The repair patch must not overlap any existing repair.

5. You will only have to pay for a new valve and wheel balance if required.
