Winter Tyres
Folks,
I'm going to buy a set of winter tyres today and don't have time for a lot of research. Can Somebody recommend a decent set for moderate money for a bugeye wrx on standard rims.
A link to a decent site that will delver would be even better.
Cheers

Got mine off ebay last year too. They were part worn, but they really were 'as new'.
I got some Michelin Alpin a3 (or maybe a4), and couldn't fault them! Was amazed with their ability in the snow.

Thanks guys,
I think I need 215 45 17 for my bugeye wrx.
Will 225 45 17 do? A lot of the winter tyres seem to come in that size.

At that size your speedo will read low, at an indicated 60mph you will be going at 61 mph, I don't think that is allowed by law.
Going to a wider size again and dropping the profile to 235 40 17, you will have the speedo reading higher i.e indicated 60 mph you will be going 59.5 mph.
See tyre size calculator for more info.

as a general rule of thumb speedos i believe may read 3% out at various speeds anyway so should not be an issue , if it will only be a couple of mph difference.if you use a sat nav it will usually show slight difference in your speed than your speedo is showing on a motorway at seventy mph.

I would like to agree with the suggestion for camskill.co.uk
They do however, appear to have only Vredestein Quatrac 3, which is perfect if you don't expect long periods of frost and the consequent hard-packed snow in your area. Loose, new fallen snow is no problem, and cold and wet weather see these tyres perform far better than any other winter tyre.
If you do expect to drive in (on?) a lot of frost hardened snow, then you must try out Continental TS830. Or TS810..the predecessor. It has surprisingly good grip on snow, with braking that will surprise you. Wet and dry grip is far better than many other winter tyres, but lags behind the Vredestein.
Please be aware of the AGE of tyres when purchasing used. After four years, the rubber has aged and hardened so much that they loose grip in wet conditions.
The production date of tyres is stamped into the sidewall. 4 digits to denote week and year. 2207 for example: Made in week 22 of the year 2007...and coming up on their last good season.

Can't find that on mine, unless it has a letter before it, and years have 95 weeks.

I highly recommend the Nokian WR G2's. Have them on two different cars last winter and found them to be excellent. Better than the Vredestein Wintrac and Goodyear Ultra Grips I'd have before. I would recommend you go for XL rated side walls in whatever tyre you eventually choose and I wouldn't increase the width any. You are better of with a narrower tyre, stay with the 215.

I just used the manufactures recommended pressure now as neither car is a scooby anymore. One is a Alpina B3 Biturbo Allrad and the other is a MKV R32. The last winter tyres I ran on the old MY03 WRX were Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme (and before them the Goodyear) and I ran those at 34psi front and 32psi rear.
