Default brake banjo leaking

just upgraded from 2 pot to 4. fit the brakes and bled up nicely.

been for a drive and the banjo bolts are leaking. since ive niped them up a lot more. been for a drive and they are still leaking. not a massive amount but enough to drip onto the inside of my rims. both of them.

i must add that i am using the old brake pipes and also the old washers x4 of them. x2 per caliper on the banjo. one each side of the banjo bolt.

is this the reason they are leaking?

how tight can i do them up before the threads pull out the caliper?

Get new copper washers, or dowty washers, 2 per banjo bolt.
Not done this on a Scoob but every hydraulic banjo I`ve done have been the same.

The washers are really a use once item, sometimes you can be lucky and get more out of them.
I would also check seating faces for corrosion etc.

Copper work hardens. This means that the washers are soft when new but once crushed up in duty the metal becomes harder.

If reused they will not deform adequetely to form a seal. It is possible to anneal them by heating to cherry red heat then plunging into cold water. It is a lot less trouble to get new ones.

IIRC 30 ft-lb on a Brembo caliper, easy to break as they are hollow.

just fit new washers about to go for a drive. one of the old banjo bolts has stretched and was near to snaping. it was elongated 3mm longer than a new one!!!

ive used 4 washers per bolt instead of 2. incase they was bottoming out.

have had a local tuner garage take a loo. they suggested that the washers i am using are too thin. 1-1.5mm each. thats the same thickness of the ones that came off.

Stick 2mm ones on then, but try screwing the banjo bolt in without the pipe on. And see how far it goes in, then without the washers to see how much slack there is without the washers then you can have some idea of how thick the washers need to be.

But most hydraulic washers are a max of 1.5-2mm, unless for propper pipes lol.

i had thought whats the point in going for the 2mm... but then thought that it has more scope to squish up and allow for any uneven surface? i did try double up the 1mm washers up as mentioned above but they leaked.

what do you mean by unless for proper pipes?

Its quite easy to damage the face of the copper washers , if there is any rust or muck in the way , I wouldn't double up with washers , they only need one either side of the banjo fitting , a copper washer is only designed to use once as they crush into shape , you need to fit new washers , and make sure it is all perfectly clean before fitting them , this is the way I fit them , and I never have a problem with them leaking
Cheers Ian

i have decided to buy a new set of braided hoses. these will be new and perfect along with new banjo bolts as mine could be destorted. new washers will be used. the 2mm ones.

if you over tourqe the bolts will it make them leak?
