Default wheel offset!!!!!

right ok, im trying to order some new wheels for my car, a my94 sti wagon.

the car currently has ultralite atec 789' wheels in 18 inch fitment.

the wheels i wanted to have are lenso samurai d1 r black with red lip in 17 inch, but the company are telling me that they are not the right offset, so will have to roll my arches!!! is this true, i thought coming down an inch in size of wheel should mean i shouldt have any problems with rubbing or anything like that.

havnt had any problems with the wheels that i have on in 18 inch size at all.

if someone could give me some pointers it would be appreciated as if i cant osrt out i will have to look at different options.

thanks

What brakes do you have ?
What width wheel ? current and new ones.
What is the offset ? current and new ones.
What width tyre do you want to run ?
Are you lowered ?
Are the wheels for show or go ?

currently have no front brakes, but will be fitting k sport 6 pots on the front with standard rears.

current wheel is 7.5x18 not sure on offset but think it was et48??
new wheel is 8.0x17 with et40 front and et35 rear
dont want to go less than 7.5 tyre width
car is lowered on tein super street coilovers
wheels will be a bit of show and a bit of go hopefully

New wheels will rub for sure ! ET45 usually rub on an 8" so further out than that is gonna mean surgery IMHO.

^ touch and go on a classic wagon, unless 7.5" width.
