A Different "what 17" tyres will fit on a classic Scoob" question !

Sorry, I know this topic has been done to death recently but I'm looking to find out whether 225/40/17s don't fit on the front & back or just the front of a classic Scoob ?
I'm after a set of new age 17" wheels in Gold for my 1998 Scoob but the only ones that seem to be availale are the STi7 wheels which come with 225/40 tyres on.
As cash is tight, if I was to get a set of STi7 alloys with tyres, I was wondering if I could keep the 225 tyres on the back and just buy new 215/40 tyres for the front ?
I realise this will leave me with bigger tyres on the back however mine is the type R which has a 35/65 front to rear power split so this would compensate for what can be lively handling (especially in the wet !)

The onlt tyre size you should fit to your car is 215/4017,if you fit different sizes front and rear then the overall diameters will be diferent and on a permanent four wheel drive it will cause diff wind up.Always keep to the same size and 22540's will catch both front and rear.

As I understand it 215 and 225 will have a slightly different outer circumference.. They will be 17 inch at the inside to fit the 17 inch wheel but the walls of the 225 tyre will be slightly taller than the 215 as they both have the same aspect ratio . 40..

Technical remarks: Sti type R uses the same torque distributing like the standard turbo version. 50/50 front/rear. Difference is only in variable locking the diff.

Thanks for the comments regarding the tyres. I have bitten the bullet, raised the credit card limit (literally) and bought a new set of 17" rims with tyres. No need to mess about now.
As for the torque split on the Type R, I was led to believe that the type R was a 35/65 split on the basis that this was a better set up for pure tarmac and the diff could be used for more forward bias on the loose stuff (the diff lock can only be used on loose surfaces as, because it locks the front diff, it requires the wheels to be able to spin. If they don't spin it will try to feed back through the drivetrain.) This is what is said on the iwoc site anyway and I have a Subaru warning that came with the car not to use the diff lock in even the first lock position when on dry tarmac.
If you came in the car with me in the wet I guarantee you would think there was a 65% rear split but I'd appreciate if anyone could add anything to this as I'm definitely no expert on the subject

You cannot lock the diff. when you drive on tarmac - you are right. But Im sure about 50/50. The diferential is the same only locking device is diferrent (and gearing 1:1 - Type R has same ratios on front and rear diffs)
