225/40 will be about 3cm bigger in rolling diameter than 215/35

What car are you running, under '01 or new age?

A given rim width will accept a range of tyre widths. For example (but conversly) Toyo state that you can fit a 195/50/15 R888 on any 15" rim from 6.0" to 7.5" (IIRC). What may catch you out is the tyre catching wheelarches.

My runabout Focus has 205 tyres on a 6.0" rim width as standard fit although they do look a bit "bulgy". 225 is certainly OK on both 7.5" and 8.0" widths.
