Default EBC Brakes - any good?

I'm needing to replace the front discs and pads on my '05 WRX.

I've been recommended EBC Turbo grooves and Red Stuff pads by a Scooby specialist, and they would cost slightly less than replacement OEM discs and pads from Subaru.

I've seen a few negative comments about EBC brakes on here, particuarly regarding Red Stuff pads. Can anyone advise as to whether I would be better going with OEM rather than EBC? Or any other makes in the same general budget (~£400 for both front discs and pads, fitted)?

Thanks for your help guys.

Hi, i would 'nt touch the red stuff pads ,when i bought my blob sti it had new discs and pads on it , the red stuff pads have killed the discs ,got about 8k out of them but thought i should have got at least two sets of pads out of a disc (no track days) going to godspeed brakes in about a months time , i think a lot of people will say the same .

Avoid them at all costs! Get Bobs or some Brembos. Much better and will last a lot longer!

Thanks to everyone for their help - one more quick request for info: Tarox brakes. Thoughts on them?

Yep, I've got some of their drilled / grooved disks on my MY06 STI. They're rubbish. Also had tarox 'rally' pads in- all fitted by the previous owner. I think they did about 3 laps at anglesey before separating from their backing plates.

Just wish I could get round to spending the money with Bob for the PF setup. Top man

I've fitted Turbogrooves to lots of vehicles all with greenstuf pads, reds are too hard - despite what you think you can do on the road you can't! they are only good on track. I had a BM 325 and the discs did 60k with the pads about 30k. 2 pads to one disc is a reasonable rate for any performance car. Only grumble was the slight pedal vibration from the groves cleaning the pad surface. I've always found them reasonable VFM ebcbrakesdirect.com

Baron, please read the posts on this forum about our new generation EBC stuff, its all quality and made in the UK and I am here to address any issues you or anyone has with our products.

Dont rely on the old info from years ago or those moaners who have not yet tried the new stuff.

Here is a good general post that I want you to read, I use this to address this type of out of date comment that exists on this thread.

Any commnents anyone ??????? Polite ones please

Cheers

Hi Guys, this is Andy Freeman the owner of EBC Brakes starting a new thread.

This thread has been started to highlight the massive improvements in EBC product quality for the faster car driver over recent years since we took over the Bristol plant. YES all EBC pads are made in the UK

Redstuff fast street (not a race or trackday pad ) – latest code shows AF88/26 on box end (base code E 388) Street legal to R90 regulations. This is the latest compound of the Red family for fast street use with reduced (and easy to wash off dust) but Not for track use. For all sizes and weights of car.

Yellowstuff fast street and trackday - code AF93/94 on box end
(base code DM 1793) Street legal to R 90 regulations. Just starting to come through Surface Scorched now which means these bed in FAST.(We toast the surface in a special infra red tunnel to take away the bed in fade and loss of track time bedding in new pads for you)

If you buy a set and it doesnt say PRE BEDDED on the box end label, take 300-400 miles steady driving then start to hit them harder for 15 – 20 stops until you get them really hot and then let them cool overnight. DONT track them out of the box unless the box end label says PRE BEDDED OK ????. This is your fast street and occasional trackday pad. For all sizes and weights of car.

Greenstuff - Fast street lighter cars - AF44/35 on box end
(base code E 344) Street Legal to R 90 regulations. For cars up to 200 bhp and weights up to around 2 tons.

Green is not an Impreza material but has been commented in forums as used on those and therefore numerous drivers of other cars including models like Legacy and Forester may wish to add their comments here.

For smaller hot hatches this new Green material is very impressive and bites hard from cold.

New Bluestuff NDX Fastest Street, trackday and full race any car - AF66/16SC on box end, SC stands for SCORCHED or pre bedded.

Subaru and EVO pads may be street legal in Bluestuff shortly, meanwhile this grade is "Officially
" for track use only although its bite from cold is fantastic and makes it perfectly safe for street use, just TOO good to pass the (friction limiting) R 90 regulations which is nuts but its the law in Europe (USA Canada and rest of the world just use them and enjoy). This pad DOES NOT REQUIRE TYPICAL RACE PAD WARMUP.

This material is DUSTY. It is designed for the guy who wants the best in braking and is not worried about the frills. Bluestuff NDX was recently in a shootout on scoobynet and beat every other pad used hands down. You can read that thread here.

https://www.scoobynet.com/wheels-tyres-and-brakes-13/842547-ebc-brakes-new-generation-disc-pad-materials-tests-and-reviews.html#post9503339

EBC has Time Attack cars and good drivers who have thrashed the New Bluestuff NDX around the Nurburgring and found it an amazing brake material and great value for money. Available for any quick car, together with EBC slotted discs (also British made !!!!) on our website

Everything you need to know is right here

PLEASE GUYS

If you want to have a moan about OLD EBC material purchased before 2010 do this somewhere else, this is to help all EBC customers know what to expect from the LATEST materials.

EBC Brakes is proud of its many significant improvements made over recent months and years and wants to highlight to drivers just how good the latest materials are.

EBC Brakes is a paid up advertiser on this forum and is therefore justifed to start this thread

I am using the new Redstuff's and cannot really fault them for my driving. The only wind up is the long bed in time. With my EBC Ultimax discs they are good. In no way are they rubbish. I may try other EBC pads next, Yellows or even the Blues but i will be using EBC. As with most things, it is very hard to lose a bad image once it has stuck. Andy from EBC came on here with an offer of free pads and a genuine offer of trying them and has worked hard to get rid of that negative image. In my eyes the open and honest trial of his pads on here has been a resounding success with the Blues taking on Pagid, and beating them and Ferodo AND cheaper! So, try some and i am sure you would be impressed as have a lot of others on here, me included.
