Default How long should brake pads last???

I have just had a phone call from my local specialist where my car is in for its 30k and MOT, he has just told me that my pads are nearly done, they are performance friction carbon pads bought from BOB on here. i have only done approx 4k since fitted and have not done any track days or anything really punishing on them.

also if this is normal for the PF set up as i have the discs as well, can i use any other pads ?????this seems a bit much tbh as i cant be buying new pads every 4k.

The downside to harder pads and therefore improved braking, is shorter pad life. You must be very heavy on the brakes to have worn them out in 4k. Either that or your calipers are seized.

I dont consider myself hard on the brakes, this is my 3rd scooby, first was WRX and then Spec C, now hawk STi, none of them needed new pads till at least 10-15k so i dont think thats the problem.

If the caliper was siezed surely i would know??? and it would be picked up on MOT etc.

I dont mind shorter pad life but 4k on normal use seems a bit pump tbh and i do trust the garage as they do a lot of work on my car.

Thanks for the input though.

Sorry but I would go down there and take the pads out and make sure they are what you put in and also see how much life is left on them!

i'd second that, i would want to know why they have worn in 4k miles. Also PM Bob to find out if this is the norm with these. I was looking at trying these next but not sure i will now. I've got DS2500 and mine are half worn and i've done 6k miles with them on Brembo drilled discs.

I have told them that i dont want them changed as i will source the pads myself, i will have a shufti when i pick the car up.

Have sent bob a link to this to see if he can shed any lite on the subject, hopefully it just the garage being over cautious, will keep you all informed.

Was going to suggest, maybe they just look worn compared to other discs perhaps?

Right,

Just got back in from garage, and have took some photos, got a advisory at the MOT for brakes(pads) i have the details ie mm left. now the guys tells me the discs are not right.

problem is that it appears that the discs are all grooved like they have ridges if you run your finger down them, surely that is not normal.

Have a look at the pictures guys and tell me what you think, i am not impressed if thats them goosed after 4-5k and approx a year old.

They were bedded in correctly as per bob5 instructions as well, hopefully BOB5 will add to this as i have PM him a link to the thread.

You can clearly see the grooves in the discs, advise please.

Sorry but nothing wrong with them dics! Mot tester being to picky IMHO The discs will wear like that because of the drilled holes and leaving blemish markings! I see this on a day to day basis and that's naff all just the normal!

What about the pads? Any pics?

And what is this picture ? LOL

Christ,

How did that get there, lol its the view of the 4th road bridge from the house.

Well, thats a relief about the brakes,so the discs having grooves /ridges on them is normal????

Says on advisory that there is only 3.5mm left on pads, front and rear

Was see-ing pounds sighns again,lol

Thanks for the comments

If you have a seized caliper, it'll just be that side that's worn - you'll tell the difference by comparing left with right.

Scooby brakes are easy to change IMHO - jack the car up, take one of the wheels off and take a look through the inspection hole in the back of the caliper. Both inside and outside pads should be worn about equally.

After 4k I wouldn't personally expect much wear at all, though I do drive in a way that's very light on brakes. Even so I'd expect to get at least 15k out of a set.

I aggree. The pads are fine but at 4k, quite worn (my std. pads were that worn at 20k+) but for 4k the discs are very grooved!

the thing is, i dont even use them to their full potential that often, my commute to work is only 3 miles and the engine is just warmed up by the time i get there through all the traffic.
only at weekends does it travel any further and even then dont boot it as we have a small son in the back most times.

hopefully BOB5 will come along and look at the thread and pass comment.

As services/MOT are every 12 months it's not uncommon for an advisery to be issued if the pads will wear out with before the next service/MOT.

You pads look like they have plenty of life left to me.

SSSShhhh last time I posted about PF brakes the thread got vaped !!!! bought an 03 STI with PF discs and pads fitted - a lot less than 10k miles on them and they were f***ed. One disc was worn unevenly and you got a judder through the peddel.

You can buy just the replacement disc and fit it to the bell that fits onto the hub but I think someone did that and it caused the worldwide credit crunch.

I put the standard discs - supplied by the previous owner - back on and problem solved.

That makes me feel a lot better,Not,lol

Still waiting for a comment from BOB5, hopefully he will be on today, if not i will have to phone him.

I would not expect them to be in that state after 4500 miles, thats for sure.

Hi Mac,

If you are in any doubt about the condition of your pads or discs have them individually checked and measured (discs and pads). If there is an issue with sticky pistons, it's best to catch it early.

Performance Friction pads and discs work exceptionally well together - one of their strong points is their longevity.

For an idea of the sort of miles and abuse they can handle Dynamix wrote a great review some time back: https://www.scoobynet.com/wheels-tyr...es-up-job.html

BOB5

Thanks for the reply.

I have looked at them a bit more closely today and the wear is even on both disks, if you run your hand down it you can feel troughs and peaks if you know what i mean, also their is a pronounces rim around the top of the disc, is that normal???

The pads have approx 4mm on them on both sides but i cannot get to see the inside one but that would not cause the ridges in the disc and the holes in the disc are nearly flush with the rest of the disc, again is this normal??

Thanks

Mac

I have just read all that thread and there must be a problem with mine then if hes getting 16k out of a set and still going strong!!!!!!!!!!!!! including track days and trips to the ring,

Mine has done town driving and a coupe of longer runs and have the same pad life left after dynamix does 16k!!!! questions have to be asked.

Not trying to stir it here but it seems something is wrong surely????

In a nutshell, you're not using them properly.

The performance friction package is excellent, but it relies on doing enough work once and a while to transfer friction material from the pad the disc, when working like this they are exceptionally good for the price.

You will benefit greatly from doing some controlled but swift stops or slows to get some heat into the pads and transfer some friction material. If you don't ever get an opportunity to do this, then you need a different pad, much more like an OEM style pad, however any decent performance pad will require an element of work to keep them at their best. And don't confuse this with pads that need heat in them to work (like dredded EBC yellowstuff) as once the friction material is deposited on the disc, the brakes will work well from cold too. It could be you have to work the brakes a little every few days if you're just commuting gently most of the time.
