Advice on classic brake upgrade
Guys,
97WRX
I want to up-grade my discs and calipers but keep my 16" standard wheels. Whats the best option for this and have you seen any forsale anywhere?
After fronts and rears.
Cheers
Ben

do you have 2 pots or 4 pots at the front already?
presuming its 2 pots then some subaru standard 4 pots will be the way forward on the front and the matching standard subaru 2 pots on the rear
if buying 2nd hand budget anywhere between 150 - 300 for the fronts and (at a guess) around 200 for the rears

If your going to change the brakes and do decide on the 4 pots then braided brake lines would be a worth while upgrade as well. There just so happens to be a group buy running in the group buys section i think so worth a look
EDIT: if you decide on something bigger than the 4 pots then the braided lines will probably come with the kit

No point in changing the rears imo but if you do you will need something like this
Classic Impreza 2 Pot & Brembo Rear Fitting Kits with Handbrake Modification
Depends what 16" wheels you have,if you have these ones then they will fit JPP : Part Details

Depends how much money you want to throw at them, and the reason for the upgrade.
Have UK MY97. Went for the brakes from the UK MY99 car as easy, cheap and effective within reason.
4 pot front calipers, discs and pads, paid £150 for the lot.
single pot rear calipers with VENTED discs and pads, paid £60 for the lot.
Goodridge brake hoses £30 for a used set.
Also removed all the backplates to help keep the temps down, were badly corroded anyway.
Changed all the shocks as well. Made a lot of difference to braking stability as well as handling and ride quality.
Cost effective on a daily driver but think may still fade on the track.
Any more than this involves big bucks and a real reason for top end braking performance to justify the cost IMHO.

As for the reason, the standard 2 pots are just shocking, Pushing enough power now to warrent the upgrade, not interested in track use just something a little better for on the road, so I like the idea of the standard upgrade.

Afraid I disagree on the rear brakes. I found that, after fitting the four pots, the solid rears were overheating badly and fading, causing loss of stability under prolongued heavy braking or during bouts of "spirited driving".
The MY99 ventilated rear discs don't give any more braking but allow more spirited driving as they are much more fade resistant, as are the four pots on the front.
Well worth £60 IMHO
