Uneven front brake pad wear
Just wondering if anybody has had this issue. I noticed on inspection that the passenger side front pad is worn to about 3mm and driver side is about 6mm. What's causing this problem?

Sticky caliper or piston. You don't say what calipers you have, the 2 pot sliding calipers on earlier cars are more likely to have this sort of problem, needs dismantling, cleaning, copper greasing.

Sorry, forgot to say I have the subaru 4 pots. Just spoke to a colleague of mine and he thinks it's normal wear. It's more like 3mm offside 5mm driver. Does the caliper move on the 4 pot.

Sticky piston or pistons.
The 4 pot pistons are prone to rusting and seizing - if its not bad get a service kit then strip, clean and replace the seals etc or if its unshiftable get in touch with Ian Godney (Godspeed Brakes) on here. He recons brake calipers on an exchange basis. Did a good job for me recently when one of my pistons jamned and I couldn't shift it.

The pads should wear down evenly if the pistons are all free , you may get a slight taper in the pads , the bottom of the pad may wear slightly more than the tops especially for the harder driver , but all 4 pads should be the same , if not the pistons are slicky , they dont have to be siezed for this to happen , just sticky , some calipers we have had in are well stuck , and have been buggers to get out.
We are seeing it more and more with these calipers now , when we recondition them we fit stainless steel pistons which will never rust , we charge £195 a pair exchange for them and you can have them any colour you want , give me a ring if you need a pair
Cheers Ian
