Default Brake Ducts for Track

Do you find rigging up some brake ducts makes a significant difference when on track days?

Anyone pics of your setup?

Anyone know of fog light covers with a duct already?

Alternativly i can buy some cheapo covers and cut them up to rig the ducts.

WOuld be nice to know how effective people find them on the track first tho.

Huge difference, D1CCY has cut access panels into his wheel arch liners to allow air to the brakes on track. Help control temperatures, and they should last longer too !

HTH

Chargespeed to some fancy carbon ones for blob-eyes, not cheap tho'.

Interesting.

I hear you can get paint which changes colour at certain temps. Anyone used this to work out what temp the brakes are running at?

OE fog light coveres seem cheap enough. Looks like there is some place which sells a clean looking "hole" to.

Think ill get under the car tomorrow see if its feasible.

Anyone do anything to prevent throwing water onto the brakes? i.e. curve hose upwards then down to the brake.

Also is the best place to aim the duct at the caliper? Slightly concerned about thorwing leaves/muck direct into the disks. Perhaps a wire mesh at the front would be a prudent measure.

Actually quite like these
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUBARU-IMPREZA-WRX-STI-FOG-LIGHT-COVERS-02-03-BUGEYED_W0QQitemZ360111152605QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK _CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item360111152 605&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301|66%3A 2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

Shame they are not for classic. Look cool, will keep the crap out, and hopefully be functional.

Will keep looking. Seems like this could be a real cheap mod!

Hmm. That guide shows the duct goes to the back of the wheel, and isnt really directed at the brakes at all. Any pics of your lots setup?

I recently bought a set from etsracing for my classic and they came with the holes precut.

I have connected mine as a cold air feed into the engine bay on one side and just a blank on the other.

Very good service from these guys and I think they were about £30 delivered.

I'm sure they could easily be adapted.

Ideally I'd like a set up so I just pop my fog light covers out when on track with the brake cooling ducts hidden behind or similar to the set up in the thread already posted although my DIY skills are some what lacking.

Looks like he has some kinda air dam on the wishbone to direct from the wheel lining hole.

Think its gonna look a bit gash on a classic but ill give it a go i think. might get under the car tomorrow if i have time and plan something. Yeah i plan on making something where i can just pop the STI covers back on.

You want to direct the air into the centre of the rear of the brake disc not at the caliper. The cooling ducts inside the ventilated disc take air from the centre and "pump" it outwards as they spin. If you can get more and colder air here then it will keep the whole disc cooler which in turn will keep pads and caliper cool.

Temperature sensitive paint is available from GPR.

A cheaper solution is these stickers. You stick them to the disc (non contact bit....) and caliper and they progressively change colour as they get hot.

Those stickers look good - what temperature range is best?

The highest range for the caliper. A decent brake fluid is good until around 300 degC so if you have the 150 to 260 degC strip then as long as you don't heat it past the end your fluid will be OK.

For the disc itself 260 degC is far too cold to be useful, pads are OK up to 600 (fast road) or 700 degC (race) so none of these strips would work. The paint is probably best for discs, that does up to 630 degC.

ok good stuff. Was going to refurb my calipers with folia tec which is good up to 300c. Hoping that will be high enough for the calipers. Or rekon they will get hotter than that on the track?

Yeah i think ill go for a pair from ETSRacing too.

I think you will get 300 deg on the track no problem.

Before we had ducting fitted we were running off the scale on the temp paint. After fitting ducting from the two vents on the bottom of the STI skirt through to the front centre of the disks we are now running much lower temps, and no hairline cracks on the disks.

good news.

So is this 300deg c paint advisable. Not sure if other stuff goes to a higher temp. Will have to look around. Think its gonna be too cold this weekend anyway, so i have some time.

Damn. so the folia tec stuff is totally useless then. Will get digging for the best. Think there is some stuff for bike brakes which goes to 690

The disc might see 600 degC but I take it you're not planning to paint the disc? The front face of the pads will be similar temp. But the caliper body won't be anywhere near that temp. As said before the best brake fluid will boil at around 300 degC so the caliper must be less than that or you'd have boiling brake fluid and no more brakes.

Bad news on my previous posts to GPR, looks like they've gone t*** up, so I really hope nobody took my links and spent any cash.

Brembo do some off the shelf fluid thats rated at 340 deg I think. I am using AP at the moment and that works pretty well. We have just over 600 deg peak on the disks, and the calipers are running at 270 deg. Temp paint on the disks and stick on temp strip for the calipers.

When are you taking it on the track? Which circuit?

Took it to brands last month. Only got the skid day scheduled so far. Need to get the new brakes in and bedded. Probably end of jan. I think perhaps another brands hatch day in feb.
