fair or extortion
Just had my car serviced every thing was ok seemed a little steep at 230 for 20k service but hay ho. Was adviced to replace brake pads and asked if they could do them during the service. i looked at them when i got it back and there is still 6mm left. how big are the pads new 10mm? they wanted £210 to change them (07 plate). How long does it take 20min? must make the pads cost ~£170

Changing brake pads is pretty easy so I would begrudge paying someone else to do it anyway. Dealers will charge a nice full retail price for standard pads plus some labour, it might be interesting to know how much time the garage normally allocate. I reckon 20 mins would be possible for a slap dash job - ie not bothering to clean and lubricate properly, personally I take my time and do it properly, more like 30 mins a side (will time myself someday).
Minimum pad thickness is recommended at 2 mm but I think the garage takes the view that 6 mm might not be enough to see you through to their next service in a years time. If you were a normal motorist rather than an Subaru enthusiast (that keeps an eye on things) then I think this could be considered reasonable.
Best bet is to get some decent aftermarket pads which will be better and less expensive then fit yourself.
