Default BLACK BREMBO'S on CLASSIC

hi, some people might be interested in this as there was a thread not so long ago about rear black brembo's off the '08 STI not fitting on the classic.

well they do, as long as you use the WRX '00 on rear 290mm disc. This enables you to retain STANDARD handbrake shoes and NO brackets, which i think is a bonus over fitting gold brembo's.

There is some work to be done to get these to fit but this should cost less than what some people are charging for large handbrake shoes, let alone brackets as well.

cheers steve

Is this tried and tested on the road, been waiting for someone to find a way of fitting these as will be after a full set myself

So all you need to fit them onto a classic is the caliper and 290mm disc???

If you read the previous thread about them not fitting you will understand more about what needs to be done, at the time i was waiting for a set to arrive, and from the photos i was hopeful they would fit somehow.
The calipers themselves have to be modified but any enginneering company should be able to do this, then with this done buy some wrx discs and bolt on.
no modifications to the backplate, and the amount of material removed from the caliper is i think ok. (i think they still retain more material than the standard gold brembo's start with as the black caliper is a much larger casting to start with.)

I dont want to go into exactly what i have done until i'm happy. But it seems several people are selling the rears seperate/sending them back etc, so thought i would post this up maybe save some people some cash.

I will be running this on the road in the next week or so and have a sprint end of the month as well. This should be good enough test.

i've got faith in my own work though, but i'll let people know how i get on.

cheers steve

I have a pair of brand new Black Brembos off the rear of an 08 STi for sale if anyone wants them. I bought a full set to get the fronts for my Hawkeye STi and these are surplus to requirement so if I could get £70 for them I would be happy - the pads are almost worth that. PM me if interested. Thanks. BTW they don't fit my Hawkeye or I would have fitted them as they are completely unused.

How much did you machine off the calipers Steve?

Ive just been looking at my rear calipers and they seem to be fairly thick where they bolt on to the hub!

hi, as i said i haven't tried them yet, and you would really need to have access to cnc mill/ protrak. (or good old fashioned rotary table) i made my own fixtures to hold the caliper so i could generate some datum faces to work from to ensure
caliper is square to disc. if i'm happy with how they run i'll let people know.

cheers.

Yes I can see the new black calipers fitting easier with the 290mm discs onto a classic as the discs have less offset than the brembo discs so less would have to be machined off the caliper , the only downside to fitting them on the 290mm disc , is that the pads are bigger on the brembo calipers compaired to the subaru 2 pots , so the pad area on the disc is also too small , I would imagine the pads are hanging off the edge of the discs quite a bit ??

The calipers I had here to try didn't belong to me so I couldn't machine them in any way , I'll see if I can get a set to play with to see what I can do with them

hi, yes pads need reducing on the bottom but sit right on the outside, shame the original disc cant be used as that would be better, but i think its a easy solution, plus no fiddling with handbrake/brackets, looks factory (ish) and you get BRAND NEW everything so it all works properly.

Have you a set of two pot pads handy and can you post up the sq area so i can compare to my chopped down pads please.

The increase in diameter over 266mm is maybe more beneficial?
(i'd rather have the bembo than buy 2 pots and brackets, and lots of people seem to be happy running big front brakes only be it alcon/brembo etc).

If you manage to get these to fit with 316mm discs , i think people will be very happy including me.

cheers steve.

Hi Everyone,

just one question: will the 08 Bakes front and back fit under a WRX MY07?
or is there also some fiddling required?

Because i'm a bit confused about the classic in the title, or do you call everything older than 08 a classic from now on?

thanks

Simon
