Default How many miles can you expect from a set of discs/pads?

Hi All,

I know this is a general question but my car (2.5 Hawkeye WRX) has covered 19,000 miles and the front discs and pads need replacing. The car has been driven normally for most of the time with the odd bit of spirited driving. Is this kind of wear bad/normal/good? I did almost 80,000 miles in my previous car (non-Subaru) without needing the brakes to be replaced, so as you can imagine a bit of a difference.

The main dealer has quoted £299 to replace front discs and pads as I know little about the cost of such things can a get a decent set of mean looking brakes behind the wheels for similar money? If so, please leave you suggestion.

Regards

Get a second opinion, discs shouldn't need replacing at such a low mileage.

19k for pads i would say is normal, discs should not need replacing yet what have they told you is wrong with em? below min thickness, wharped etc.
what car did you have before 80k miles and not needing brakes replacing is certainly going some?

On the 5 scoobies I've owned, both WRX and STi, I expect to change the front pads after 30,000 and the front discs at 50,000 - 60,000. Rear pads at 40-45,000.

Hi,

I noticed a rumbling from the brakes under braking at speeds over 60 mph. The car was due a service so when i dropped it in I asked them to take a look. They said that the discs had a bit of corrosion and my passenger side one was a little bit warped. The passenger side was the only one grumbling under braking.

As for my previous car that was the new shape Vectra as it was back in 2002. I did practically all of the miles on the motorway, I recall also getting circa 35,000 miles out of the rear tyres. Quite an impressive motorway cruiser.

I've just fitted the 3rd pair of discs to my MY99 the mileage is now 68k. The first pair were changed at 30k so, as previously said, that does seem early. I think, and I may be wrong, you can have the disc skimmed on the hub to take the lip off of the edge. This could help with the grumbling.

I still have grumbling it sounds like this 'Slow down I don't like it!'

I got 38,000 miles from the disks (but they were nak'd).
The pads lasted about 25,000 miles till well tired.
Stealers will "estimate" the life of the parts and if less than mileage you may cover till next service, they will "recommend" replacement.

IMHO

like said, 19k is not normal in normal driving conditions. I'd get a second oppinion. In my old wrx I covered 45k km(~29k miles) and still had some when I sold it.
Current sti is still on original oem pad&disk at 41k km, and still has quite a lot on it, especially the disk, but front pads too, and I do drive quite hard

Rumbling under braking means brakes are warped...so its probs right enough that you need to replace them. They shouldnt be worn at that mileage though.

When you get new discs, try to cruise for the last 5 miles or so home after you've been booting it...this will help cool the brakes down. They usually warp when you heat them right up then stop the car straight away leaving seriously hot pads sitting over one section of the disc.

Presumably the car is under 3 years old. I'd argue that the discs should last the 3 years /60k warranty period. Claim that they are not fit for purpose if they warp within 19k. When I've sold my last 2 Scoobs at 42 and 50k they've been on original discs. Pads are another matter...
