Default pads or new kit

Hi guys,
Just brought sti 06 for track days, wondered what's best? Pads to go on for now, as I am looking to have ap on fronts in a couple of months? I don't know if I can justify going to 355 which means changing to 18", or just puting 330 on. Any opinions?

The Brembo calipers will work well with a Performance Friction setup, cheaper than APs but very good.

Performance Friction - top brakes and you can sort out the whole lot for less than half the price of AP's and they work plenty good enough

There is a write up here that I did on them:

I will be running with that exact same set up in Time Attack this year.

Your front discs now are 326mm with big 4 pots and large pads , you wouldn't see much of an improvement by fitting an AP 330mm kit , you would fitting the 355's.

You can get your existing setup to work very well , I have recently tried the Carbonne Lorraine pads , these are fitted to top end motorsport cars , The WRC Citroens for one are using them , They are the best pad I have ever tried , and I have tried just about all of them , I have just fitted a set into my Type R rally car to replace the ferodo DS3000's I have been using , they can be a bit squeely and walking pace speeds , not that that would be a problem for a track day car.

I can supply you these for £90 a set , and if you want discs to go with them , I can supply you 2 piece discs and bells in the current group buy for £300 a pair , for £400 all in delivered it will totally transform your brakes.

Hope this helps
Cheers Ian

Thanks for the replys, this was just the information I wanted especialy about the ap 330.
Now, the next question is will it make much diference between fitting new pads like carbonne lorraine with my original disks, or changing them for 2 piece grooved discs and bells? The car is for trackdays, and to go to the Nurburgring, but will the pads work on the road as well as I have to drive it there?

Cheers, Andy

Hi Dynamix,
just read your link and it seems you may have answeed my question as you had what I was looking at fitting ds2500 and you killed them. Have you done any more trackdays since and are you still happy with them and dont regret going for a big brake kit?

Cheers, Andy

Not only did the DS2500 ruin a perfectly good set of discs in one track day at Cadwell but they turn to crumble when over heated. In less than 5000 miles the pads were dead.

The Performance Friction Z rated pads work perfectly from cold (with almost no squeel) but 1 set of pads did 20,000 miles including:
- approx 10 track days
- 1 round of Time Attack at Knockhill
- 3 trips to the ring

And not once did they fade or do anything other than what Paul at Zen said they would. ie stop/slow the car.

At the time I fitted them, they were a very well kept secret, now more people are realising that you dont need big brakes to stop properly, just effective ones

btw - The 2 piece discs have done 30K now and are still as good as new.

I have just changed from the Z rated fast road and track (which were perfect) to the more extreme 01 Race Pad for this years Time Attack. Now that I have bedded them in the initial bite is massive and will be spot on for what I want. Z rated will be enough for you though unless you have a track only beast running R rated tyres.

I ran the Z rated pads a couple of weeks ago at Donington (these had done 10,000 miles already) and at the end of a long session on track they were still good enough to lock sticky track rubber braking from 135 due to pushing a braking distance too far. At no point did they fade. (I run braided hoses and Millers racing brake fluid too)

No regrets on not buying a big brake kit - on the contrary, I am glad I didnt and I have no plans to change that decision based on upgrading something that doesnt need upgrading.

I had been telling Zak at Mocom about how good my brakes are for a long while and he tried a set on his at Brands Hatch still dubious as to whether they would be good enough. (He was running AP Strap drives iirc) Suffice to say he still has them on his car for Time Attack this year and is very impressed with them.

In summary ... (sorry I ramble on ) Put the £1000 difference into something else on the car or pay for some track days to get the best from it an tick the box that says 'upgrade brakes'.

Do they do anything for us 'oldie' WRX owners?
When i asked about PF setup they only did the STi discs, etc.
