Question

Most of this has probably been asked before but still

I'm thinking of sorting the brakes before going down to Catalunya. Looking through the bills, the pads were changed at 23k miles and I'm just coming upto 45k miles now. AFAIK, they are std. Subaru parts on my MY99 - is 22k miles good for front pads?

I had some major brake fade moments on the Tour d'Ecosse I don't fancy them in Spain.

I've got some Mintex 1144s sat on the shelf in the garage, but I've heard they warp the standard discs (comments?) They came with the car, so a "free" upgrade but I guess I'd need to shell out for some new discs as well.

I've read some good write ups of the EBC TurboGroove discs and red or green stuff. The DS2000 Prodrive upgrade sounds tempting to as if they warp the discs, then it's a warranty job (from reading other threads). Can uprated pads with the standard discs really make that much of a difference?

Do braided hoses and better fluid make much a difference?

No track use planned at present, just fairly standard fast road stuff.

TIA,

Chris.

Using Mintex 1144s with Black Diamond Grooved discs on the 2pots of my Legacy TT. They are a considerable improvement over the original setup, but points to beware :

1) Horrible squealing which have got less but very noticable unless you keep the windows up and the radio on! I followed the bedding in process carefully as I was aware they do squeal.

2) The Black Diamond discs were supposed to be uprated items but with only 4months and about 5000km, I can already feel a lip on the discs. I reckon 2 set of pads to 1 set of discs maximum if i'm lucky. Either the discs are not up to it or the pads are too harsh (which is what I reckon). I don't really drive that hard either.

Besides the above, I think they setup is quite good value for money!

Thumbs up

22k miles from the first set is also what I got - I was expecting to have to have them done again at my 3 year svc - 9 months.

Then again was considering swapping disks too - but cant make my mind up which ones !

Chris, you're welcome to come out in my car to feel what my brakes are like. They're Godspeed 335mm disks, braided hoses, Mintex 1155 pads (I think) and standard MY00 4 pot callipers.

Excellent stopping power and very good value for money kit.

Chris

I don't think the wear rate on greens would be up to the driving in Catalunya.

"The Cat" involves some 20+ minute mountain descents and greens have been known to disappear after 30 minutes track use (probably less severe than a blast down Montsenny).

I would go for something with a high temperature rating and life expectancy. You may also want to consider taking some spare pads as well.

Urm, Sounds like it's best to get some new pads as a minimum and keep the M1144 in the boot as a backup.

Would DS2000 fit the bill Pete?

Robman,

I might just take you up on that offer. Can I ask how much you paid (off-list if you want)?
