Default Winter or all-weather tyres?

Anyone got any suggestions about whether a good all-weather tyre will do a decent job in snow and ice without having to resort to specialist winter tyres? If so, any specific recommendations? Currently I have "high performance" (not!) Sumitomos on my Legacy 2.5 Sports Tourer, which I don't think will be much good, 4wd or not.

i have winter tyres on my car now and they are a vast improvement over the all weather tyres that were on there before, the car feels so much more planted in the ****e weather than before giving much more confidence, they are Michelin Alpin m&s so i'd expect them to be quite good though!

Default Winter tyres

Hi - thanks for the info. Are you in the UK? Do you change tyres for every winter? What are the Michelins like noise- and wear-wise in normal driving? (Too many questions - sorry!)
