Brake pad wear

Brake pad wear
I have Brembo STI setup with DS 2500 pads.
Bloke in garage suggests they (fronts) are due for replacement.
Instructions that came with pads say they are good with up to 2mm of pad being present.
Currently the backing plate is about 5 - 6 mm from the discs (front) on both outside trailing edges.
Can anyone tell me whether these pads tend to wear evenly and as to whether they give other signs (before complete failure) when they are best replaced.
I understand that garages tend to deal with people who are not inclined to inspect tyres/wheels more often than about once a year and are therefore fairly conservative, but TBH I look at them on pretty much a daily basis.

If you're happy with the braking performance don't worry. Mine seem to be lasting forever....
PF set up next when all worn out...
Dunx
P.S. Wouldn't let it get down to 2mm tho' !
