17" or 18" wheels on a MY97

Guys and Gals,
I need a little help . AP 4-pot kit (330mm) on its way so current 17" alloys must be used for winter. This leaves room for summer alloys (sad or what!) what do you lot out there recommend out of the above? are the 18" alloys going to give too harsh a ride?
ps - all info from local people up my way (Aberdeen, Scotland) would be appreciated as you know how rough and s****y our road quality is!
