Default Should grooved discs make a noise when braking ?

I've just replaced the standard front discs and pads on my 03 WRX with some grooved discs and Mintex extreme pads . When braking with anything more than light pressure they make a whining noise , which I guess is the pads rubbing on the grooves . Is this normal?

Regards
Dave
