Question

I had the original Subaru OEM pads replaced at 13000 miles with Mintex 1155s. I have done only 3000 miles since fitting them. I checked the pads today and the near side front outer pad is nearly down to the metal The off side outer pad still has roughly 7-8mm left. I removed both front wheels and checked the inboard pads - both have loads of pad material left on. The car has not been on any track days.

Any idea why the excessive wear on this one pad? Discs are Bremsport Group N which were fitted just after the new pads were put on.

Any suggestions for alternative pads?

Cheers,

Ian.

Ian,

Many thanks for the reply. Sorry forgot to mention, my car is a MY00 and has the four pot calipers.

Cheers,

Ian.

The car was registered in March 2000 and has done 16000 miles total. The pads were purchased mail order (Falkland) and then fitted by a Subaru main dealer at its last Service.

Cheers,

Ian.

Cool

Hi Ian
I have the same car/setup with you and my only problem is that very often I hear a repeated noise from the rear brakes like one of the rear disks "scratch" the pad time by time (once every rotation)!
I checked twice the disks, as the noise seems to be due to cracked disk, checked the handbrake etc. but I can't find the solution.
Although I am very happy with the 1155 compound.

Wear should be pretty even with 4 pots as you have 2 pistons acting on both the inner and outer pads. Not sure about Subaru 4 pots (I've never worked on mine, but am about to), but I had a Porsche with 4 pots and there was a nipple on each side of the caliper for bleeding (ie 2 per caliper). If this is the case you may want to check the brakes have been bled correctly, as you may have air in the side with least wear.
As previously mentioned within this thread are you getting no pulling symptoms etc?

Cheers

Ian, if it does turn out to be a sticking piston, then the dealer ows you a set of pads at least for a very dangerous oversight.

If the pistons were sticking before the new pads were fitted, the unequal wear would have been obvious and should have been corrected. If the brakes were fine before you had the pads done, then it's equally obvious that someone needs a slap.

Good luck,

Richard.

Thanks for all the advice.

A mate (mechanic) has cleaned the brakes up and fitted new Mintex 1155s. The Pistons at the side of the worn pad seemed free enough but the pad didn't seem to be moving very well along the pins. It looks like the main Dealer didn't use any copper grease when the original pads were fitted four months ago

Anybody want to buy three part worn Mintex 1155s (two are a lot less than half worn)

Cheers,

Ian.

It sounds as your calipers are siezing on the side the pads are worn , if you have the two pot calipers it is the sliders , remove the caliper body off the caliper carrier and remove the sliders , clean the sliders with WD40 and emery cloth and refit them with some grease , only problem is you will need to buy a set of pads as you cant change just one , Hope this helps , Ian

Hard to tell, but it's obviously a major problem which needs fixing pronto. Take it to your Subaru dealer for a thorough check. It should be fairly obvious what's wrong from what you've said. Is the car only 13,000 miles old?

Most likely would seem to be sticking pistons in one side of the caliper. Or the new disc wasn't seated properly. Less likely might be a very strange (soft/faulty) pad compound on one pad, or could one of the discs be the wrong spec? Amazed if you didn't feel pulling or juddering. Who did the fitting?

Richard.

Edited to add that Ian beat me to it while I was watching telly

Thanks everybody for the replies I'm not using the car until next weekend and will get a mechanic mate to look at the brakes then.

It does seem a bit strange - no noticeable pulling to one side - or bad juddering when braking hard.

I supplied the pads and the dealer fitted 'em - so I can't see them wanting to give me a replacement set of pads. They only charged me a tenner for fitting (might explain a lot?!)

Cheers,

Ian.
