I was always lead to believe that you kept the same pads front and rear to maintain brake balance

Recently splashed out and bought myself a set of Pagids and they are awesome - couple of times before that I'd gone for the £60ish bracket and bought Black Diamonds and then Red Stuff's - turned out to be a false economy, neither seemed to be an improvement over the standard (£30?) pads.

Buy the best pads you can, you'll certainly notice a difference.

Yes that is right.that is why changing worn brake pads is vital to maintain the good performance of the Subaru brakes.

Standard rear brakes should be fine. I'd spend my money on getting the fronts done.
Either Ferodo or Pagid Pads with braided hoses and some Dot 5.1 brake fluid.
