Default 17" Alloys

Im sure one of you scooby experts will know the answer to this, but ive only had my classic 98 uk wagon for a few months so know very little about these cars at the moment. If I were to put 17" alloys on, would this make a huge detrimental difference to the handling. I put 17" on my old 172 clio, and the handling was compromised. I don't really want to shell out for alloys and then find that the handling has gone to pot. Any help or advice would be appreciated

17's are acutally recommended by Prodrive, so if they recommend them but ensure you get the right tyre sizes, either 205/40/17 or 215/40/17.
