Help needed with load index for F1 GSD3's
Looking for some help.
Went to order some goodyear GSD3 f1'S today and I am getting some conflicting info ref the load rating.
I had asked for 225X45X17 Y-Rated with XL load rating. I was told that the XL load rating only comes on the W speed rated tyres.
I have looked on the Goodyear website and it specifies the 225X45X17 Y-rated with a load index of 91. I assume that is correct as I thought the load index need for the new age impreza was 91. So is it the case that the XL load rating does not apply to this size as long as you get the Y speed rated tyre or is there a W rated tyre with a higher load index
The hand book specifies 225/45R17 90W Which I assume would mean that a Y-rated tyre with a 91 load index would be fine as this has to be a higher spec than the W speed rated tyre?

I'm pretty sure that I have the 91 GSD3's on my STI.
As far as I know (someone may correct me) the problem with the split sidewalls and the need for the XL rated tyres is only relevant to the 205 WRX (i.e. non STI sizes.) The load rating for the standard WRX 205 width tyre is much lower.

Phoned goodyear technical department and they say the 225/45ZR17 Y speed rated with 91 Load index is the correct tyre for the new age car, the XL loaded tyre with the W speed rating and a load index of 94 is not required.
So Y rated it is then and they are £10 cheaper
Thanks for the help though

Archie,
A tyre rated at 91Y
Load rating of 91 = 615kg (car and carried loads to a kerb weight of 2460kg)
Speed rating Y = 186mph
already a pretty serious bit of kit!
Think previous sized 215/45 R 17 WRX F1s only had a rating of 87W (545kg & 168mph) and there were 'issues' on Imprezas due to the loading that they are able to place on the rubber so Goodyear brought out the XL version - same sized tyre but much higher speed and load rating.
The 225/45 R 14 F1 (for STi 8J rims) is already rated at 91Y so doesn't need an XL version. Any car heavier and requiring similar or higher speed rating would probably need much more rubber anyway so tread size would be well in excess of 225.
Hope that makes sense mate.
Cheers,
Stewart.
PS - If you're not already hooked up with a local 'contact', Jim Dickson Tyres in Cumbernauld did me a crackin' price on 4 F1s - very Subaru friendly and a great bunch of guys to boot!
