Are 17" the best size?
I've done some searching on the site but no real answer to my question.
I'm coming up to changing my tyres soon, and while I was at it I was thinking of changing the wheels too.
I previously owned an MR2 Turbo and changed from 16 to 17's...aesthetically nicer and allowed for 235 to be fitted to the rear.
What wheel size is in your opinion 'best' for the impreza?..aesthetically and practically.
I have a version4 sti wagon with 16" gold alloys and feel I want something wider than 215's!!!
Any comments would be welcome to help me with my choice.
Thanks,
Chris.

I would also be interested in any comments as well, I have a MY97 V3 STi wagon and I was thinking of going to 18" from 17" but not sure whether it is a good move or not, it would look good but don't want the handling to be problem.

For classics, idon't think you can get much wider than 215's on without tyres rubbing.
I have 17's with 205/40 profile tyres, needed a bit of a drop in ride height tho, looked like it was on stilts with eibach springs.

I have a P1(classic shape) and run 18" wheels with 225/35's with no problems and the handling is great although firm probably due as much to the upgraded suspension as the 35 profile. P1's came with 17" as standard and 18's as a upgrade option. I don't see why any other classic can't do the same.

prefer 17s myself and 215/45
had 18s 225/35 felt a bit 'skitty'??? in the fast corners

I've had 2 set of 16", a set of 17" and now on a set of 18" and I would say the 17" gave the best ride and by far the best cornering speeds.
But as said they don't seem to fill the wheel arch as well as the 18".
If I was choosing again:
17" with Goodyear Eagle F1's are an awesome combination

So if 16's are better all round, What tyres seam to work best on them on a 96 wrx wagon? Was looking at 18'z as well but started to take notice of our super not smooth roads in Kent lol!!!

ok the reason why I want 17' ovr 16' is cause I have a Type R that come with groupe N short ratio gear box. As I don't use it for rally, the gear box is a bit short for my liking. my idea was to fit 17' with 50 profil (if it fits....)

I don't think they would fit without rubbing, they'd mess up you speedo a bit, and there's only a small percentage difference in gearing.
Can't you do something with the tranmission? Lots of people have this problem so there must be an answer. Try API.
Richard.

I've just fitted some 205/55/16 tires on those 16"
they are not rubbing. the fact that bigger tires diametre mess up the speedo a bit do not bother me that much.
would love to fit 215/50/17 if it doesn't rub of course.
anyone has tried this ?

I like my 17"s after having 16"s and needing bigger clearance for the new breaks.. tried someones 18"s and it just felt too hard and on track they arent all that.
I got Redlines ET 48 and not a prob at all, just needs to come down a touch in the ride height, but it doesnt look too odd at the mo.

ZAK : To improve my gearing (top speed runs) I went from 205 50 16 to 205 55 16. This is longer substantially than 215 40 17 and also 215 45 17. I have not come across 205 or 215 50 17.
215 40 17 handled better than 215 45 17 but the 205 50 and 55 16 handled much the same but some of the experience may have been down to changes in the actual tyre performance. Goodyear F1 and NCT, Toyo Proxy 1s and 1R, Khumo which I never want to see again, Avon, Uniroyal, Yokohama and Vredestein. Next tyres will be Goodyear, Vredestein or possibly Yokohama.

personally on a classic i think i wouldn t go any more than 17 s, to get a bigger tyre on there
it all depends on wot u want from your car!!! i like backroads and 18 s with a thin tyre wouldn t be the better choice.
plus there can be a big price difference in put on 18 in tyres compared to 17 in tyres

hey harvey,
I have switched from 205/50/16 to 205/55/16. I think it is great for mauritian Roads
Now, one of my rims is damanged so I need a new set. I thought It would be sad to buy 16" rims, 17" sounded the best option. But you are right, I haven't seen 215/50/17 tires. I have ony see 225/50/17 or 215/45/17
