Tyre brand always depends what you want them to do so cant help you there, but in a 17" you'll want 205/45/17 as this is the designed size or 215/40/17 if you want a wider and ususally cheaper choice. Some use 215/45/17 but I believe there can be some rubbing issues especially when the car is fully loaded or the suspension is lowered, Ohh and the speedo reading will be slightly less accurate.

I've had Goodyear GSD3, Toyo T1S and my present ones Toyo T1R
All have been in 215/40 17", as worked out on a tyre size calculator, as they are on WRX wheels, replacing the 16 wheels on my UK car
They are cheaper to buy than the 16s were as many cars use that size.
Of them all, I like the present Toyos best, but may pay (a lot) more next year for some Michelin Pilots.......
Toyos are excellent in the dry, reasonable in the wet, wear reasonably, and aren't dear, (mine were £320 for four, fitted and balanced.) I've got nearly 20000 miles out of the present set, by rotating front to rear, and they will be replaced in the new year.

I've just upgraded my 16s to 17s and after much searching on this subject I went for 215/40/17 tyres.
I read pretty much every thread I could find on the subject and the conclusion I came to was that Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 seem to the best performer but they aren't suitable for the Subaru because of their over-soft 83Y sidewall.
Goodyear do an XL version of the GSD3 tyre which has a stiffer 91Y wall but not in the 215/40/17 size.
For this reason I picked the Toyo T1-R
