The official size for 17's is 205/45/17, but of the big makes I think only pirelli make this size. 215/40/17 is almost exactly the same rolling radius and fits the 17's very well so is used by most people who fit 17's to scooby's. 205/40/17 is a little smaller so will affect the speedo etc (only by a tiny amount though!). I have had Pzeros in 205/45 and F1's in 215/40, but never any 205/40's. I was told 205/40 and 215/40's would be the same price in F1's, but I think in budget tyres 205's are cheaper...

Like Jon says the 205/45/17 is the normal size found for the 17's. You could fit the 215's with no probs though (Just harder to get hold of if you need a quick replacement from local garage).
I had Falken and Bridgestone's in 205/45 - both good (Falken's very cheap as well).

Gary, be careful with 7.5in rims. Make sure they fit. I would have though 225/40x17 would fit the wheel best, but then will the wheels and tyres fit the car without rubbing rear arches? It's going to be very, very tight in there.
