Standard brakes are rubbish!

Standard brakes are rubbish!
Folks, just hoping you can give me some general advice on brakes. I'm a bit of a numpty with technical stuff but I recently took my totally standard MY05 WRX on a track day and realised the severe limitations of the standard brakes. I knew from road driving they weren't much cop but this really showed them up.
Anyway my questions is, what do you recommend for improving them? Do I just need better pads or do I need improved discs and/or callipers too? Which types are good and where do I get them and how much are they? I don't want to spend any more than necessary just to give that extra bit of performance on the roads and very occasional track days. I'd probably manage to fit them myself with my old man's help.
Many thanks.

I had the same problem but I just went out and bought the best I could afford....AP Racing 6 pot calipers, Ferodo DS2500 pads, DOT 5.1 fluid, goodrige braided hoses and godspeed 335mm discs (along with all the necessary mounting kit). I thought what's the point in trying to utilise the standard 2 pot setup when it clearly wasn't up to the job of stopping the car quickly even on the road? It cost £1320 all in and was worth every penny!

New pads are probably the best VFM change at £100 or thereabouts. If you're feeling wealthy then the Godspeed - www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk - conversion puts whopping 335mm discs on and spacers to widen your standard callipers and moves the callipers out to engulf these discs. The joy of this system is it fits under standard wheels. This about £600 but is money well spent a lot of us would say. I've had mine for two years.
