Default Brembos vs AP's

I'll about to purchase some nice big brakes for my MY00 wagon...i know everyone raves about AP's but I'd like peoples opinions on comparisons between the two makes. the more i save on brakes the sooner i can afford my fmic and new turbo

cheers,
ian

whilst i'm asking, how much better are six pot than four pot brakes in real world conditions?

Ultimately AP 6 pots will stand repeated abuse better. More to the point is that the pedal feel of the APs is exquisite, much better than gold Brembos.

In addition you might not have to change your wheels to fit the APs as the calipers take up a bit less space.

Brembo took over AP Racing Ltd in 2000. Their Brake systems are different however and so are the casting used in the discs. Having used AP for many years I have found their products to be generally superior to Brembo and the customer service to be very good.

Stoptech also supposed to be very good. There was a GB on here recently if memory serves, maybe do a search and ask for some feedback off new users.

AP are universally very highly regarded, though.

Stoptech are very very good.

I had their 4 pot, 328 kit on my CTR and it rocked. Massive stopping power with zero fade everytime.

Since sold the kit on to put my CTR back to standard before it goes and the guy who's bought them is over the moon with them. His CTR is running a 9psi S/C kit along with some S/C profile cams and puts out over 300BHP. He uses it for track days only and told me he had to get used to braking all over again since buying my kit, he really does rate it that high.

I think as long as you buy a well proven brand, go with some good pads, braided hoses and good fluid you should experience monster stopping power, just some may be a bit more 'monster' than some

You need to ask what will you be using the car for also. If track days are your thing, or your running big BHP and like doing some fast, relentless fast road driving then your gonna want the best stopping power possible IMHO.

AP website lists all the kits. The nice 330 mm one is CP5570, you can have grooved or drilled discs and red or black calipers (I've gone for grooved and black). I suspect there's not much difference in price wherever you go as these are a premium product so why should anyone discount it much. Scoobyclinic sourced mine for me and fitted them. ASPerformance are AP stockists. You won't get much change out of £2K what with VAT.

Trails, I don't have any experience of aftermarket Brembos, so can't help.

Hey Trails,

Try Willwood http://www.wilwood.com/ , a US company that do brakes for NASCAR among others. I just missed a group buy on these and are apparently excellent (there may be a UK distributer or will have to import them).

I'm looking for a big brake set up myself so if you find anything for good value drop me a PM and might be able to get a group discount.

If I remember correctly (from meets a while ago), your wagon has the same wheels as my saloon , so the same brakes would be logical step .

Haven't been for ages as been sooo busy every weekend.

All the best

Had a look around at some web pages and the one below (inc hoses) comes in at approx £1,200 (ex shipping - have emailed them) for the front and rears.

http://www.spmotorsports.com/ATCsubaruwrx_brakes_kit_wilwood.html

Hopefully they will set up another group buy to avoid me c0cking up as I probably would

If a GB does go ahead on these then it may be worth dropping gruppe-s an email,
I emailed them around the time of the last GB for some grooved and drilled 6 pot wilwoods and they could deliver to me for the same price as the GB price (that was just for one set) did not have the cash to spare at the time.

I'd be interested in front 6-pot and rear 4-pot both drilled and grooved.

Had AP 6-Pots with 356mm discs on my old scooby and they where amazing, not once did I get brake fade, and they also gave me so much confidence braking late into corners.

The only thing I would say is that they where a bit of a overkill, first of all my newage WRX had 315bhp so wasnt all that powerful to warrant spending £1,700 on a set of brakes when maybe a set of Brembo's from a newage STi would have done, also I never used them on a trackday, so really I used them for fast road driving occasionally.

If I had to do it all again, I would settle for a set of Brembo's from the newage STi's, I think apart from the AP's looking good behind your wheels do you really need them, If you do a load of trackdays then fair play, there the best mod you can buy, but occasionnally fast road driving I would save the money that you would spend on the AP's and get a second hand set of Brembo's with some good pads!
