Smile who's used what tyres on an 05 sti? comments appreciated

i guess this applies to 06 aswell (if they use reo70's that is)

after experiencing the somewhat iffy grip levels of the Bridgestone REO70's in the pi55ing down rain today, i think a change is on the cards when they wear out.

dry grip is staggering, but not greatly impressed in the wet!

i know the wet/damp grip thing has been done to death but could i have feedback/comments from anyone who's changed the tyre type on this model please?

does the sti benifit from the stiffer sidewall of the REO70 so would a softer sidewalled tyre (F1 for example) just not suit the car?

not to sure if the suspension has been built around this tyre or it was picked for another reason?

would the different suspension set up make a tyre that works well on, say an 03/04 sti, not work so well on the revised set up of the 05?

any comments greatly appreciated

After a few near death experiences with stock RE070 on my 05 STi, I decided to go 18” which had worked really well on my previous 04 WRX PPP. 18 x 8 OZ with Marangoni Zeta Linea, which seem not so popular, but I find exceptionally good once scuffed in. I think the Zeta Linea are similar in some ways to the F1, anyway the result was dramatically improved over all road feel with complete elimination of noise and no tram lining at all. Car feels much safer driven at speed, much more planted. While the RE070 have immense grip in the dry on a flat road, they are not so great the rest of the time. I’ve just ordered a set of 18 x 8.5 Work Emotion CR Kai, and I’m going to try Dunlop Sport Maxx on them for a change. Anyway, go for 18” with decent tyres, transforms the car and make for a much nice driving experience, IMHO of course

in an ideal world i'd make the switch to 18's, but funds won't allow it for a good while yet (plus i quite like the design of the current wheel)

never heard of those tyres before, but thanks for your reply

Mike Wood recommends the Pirelli P Zero Corsa Assimetrico for STI's in UK roads.

Expensive tyre and hard to source but Black Circle can supply them on special request at £175 per tyre.

holy ****! that's one dear tyre

not been a fan of pirelli for a while now, granted the last one i used was a p-zero assy but unless they've come on in leaps and bounds since then, they'll be well down the list.

any other opinions out there?

P Zero Corsa is OE fitment on the S204 I believe. Very grippy tyre.

Just had the p-zero rossos taken off my P1 and replaced with toyo t1-rs. The rossos are the best tyre I have had on any of my imprezas for both wet and dry grip and this includes trackdays in both types of weather just couldn't quite stretch to replace same for same.

RE: the RE070's.

I found the grip on wet roads to be fine on my own car MY05 STI, just as you say, bit dodgy on damp.

Anyway, I put PS2's on after the RE070's.
PS2's are fine, although I didn't get the extra load version so you do notice the tyre flex on cornering.
However, the grip with these is superb, just as good as the RE070's and the wet/damp roads are not a problem with these.
I'd probably say that the extra load version sorts the flexing.
Oh, and the PS2's are very quite in comparison to the RE070's

Hi Paul, I had Toyo T1-S tyres on my old sti, very similar grip level and feel to the F1's that are on your old classic.
Plus they don't cost the earth!

I'm not sure about the Toyo's
I put a set on my previous car MY02 STI and founnd them absolutely awfull.
Never again would I put a set of these on.
Although some say the new Toyo's are a lot better?

Have tried F1's, but these were gone in no time at all.

Personally so far of all the tyres I've tried, the pilot sport 2's are by far the best.
