Quickie break question.
.......pads are low and are about to be replaced but after a hard breaking moment this weekend (ahem ) I now have a grinding sound and can hear constant contact (grinding) as moving?
Now have I shagged the discs as well as the pads?
Is there any obvious way to tell?

Many thanks

Yes mate youve shagged the lot and will all need replacing, if you feel the surfaces of the discs they will now have a very nasty texture and probably some grooves now gouged in them.
Get new discs and pads and a brake fluid change wont hurt if youve been giving them death

It is probably just the stupid Subaru wear indicators, which consist of a metal clip which, once the pad is suitably worn, grinds constantly on the bell housing. The clips can become bent out of place before the pad is fitted and will thus give an incorrect indication of wear. Pop out the pads (10 minute job, including jacking and wheel removal) and inspect before ploughing loads of ca$h into something which may be fine. One hard stop should not kill the full set-up.
