Disc options for Alcon calipers?
Hi all,
Recently purchased some second hand Alcon calipers and discs etc.
Discs are fairly worn and I'm wondering what options I have for replacements.
I've heard the Prodrive discs are very expensive.
Does anyone know if the newage Brembo disc will be compatable?
Cheers in advance,
Olly

It all depends on the hub measurements for the disk as that's what makes them line-up inside the calipers correctly.
So, a Brembo disk make have all the obvious measurements i.e. thickness, diameter, but it may sit too close or too far out from the wheel hub to sit inside your calipers.
You're right, the original ones are mega-expensive. Contact Ian @ Godspeed in Wales as he could make some alloy bells and give you a nice two-piece disc to replace it.

No the STi Brembo discs wont suit as they are 30mm thick , the Alcon ones are 28mm thick , so the brembo disc will not fit inside the Alcon calipers , Godspeed does offer an AP 330mm x 28mm disc and bell to replace the one piece Alcon discs you have , when they wear down you only need the outer part of the disc as you re-use the bells again , not sure of the current cost of them so email Ian - ian@godspeedbrakes.co.uk

Sounds like you need to talk to Mark28. See this thread, you may need 8 mates though....

> I'm not sure , they are the only ones I know of
But you posted on the other thread so you must have known about BGD? I think you should come clean about your relationship with Godspeed. You seem to be their major supporter and apologist on here. You even tell little white lies on their behalf. Are you a shareholder, Ian's brother or just a satisfied customer?
Just to keep it fair, I'm a many times satisifed, many times customer of BGD over many years and many cars, no other involvement....

Are these calipers very rare then?
I find it hard to believe only two companies on the planet make discs that fit.
I appreciate that they can be custom made but its not a custom set-up. These came from the manufacturer, so why so few "off the shelf" choices?
Cheers

the original design is copyrighted by Prodrive and are only available from Subaru agents..............plus in the great scheme of things they are a very small use item
have been told today that Subaru have apparently reduced the cost of this replacement, not sure how true that is??

Thanks Alyn that would be interesting to know if they have.
Not wanting to stir anything but if Subaru copywrited the design for the disc, shouldn't they be the only ones selling it?
Or are Godspeeds ok because they are of a different design?
If so, whats the other crucial measurement for the disc to make sure it fits the Subaru? Its 330mm x 28mm.........and what else makes it different from another 330mm x 28mm disc?
Do BGD now stock these discs? Or are they still a special order item?
Cheers

There's far more to it than that Olly, the Godspeed/BGD design is completly different to the standard one, as firstly they are two piece, secondly the 'bell' is alloy.....
The actual size of the disc is merely the start, there's disc/hub offset to consider, hub or bell thickness....stud spacing.... etc etc etc./.......
I 'think' that Ian Godney (godspeed) may have these discs/bells on the shelf..... no promises though..... i don't know his premises intimately...

Two things to be aware of,
1, The discs in the pic are incorrectly fitted, (ie the grove should be trailing)
2, Dont buy discs that have been drilled, unless you are prepared to change them on a very regular basis, (they will crack).
Stay with what you have got, you only get what you pay for..

I'm just curious as to why, if there aren't any issues, hardly anybody makes discs for them?
Do the rally cars use these calipers? If so, do they use the Prodrive one piece discs or 2 piece?

The Rally cars don't use these calipers, they use specific race ones...... i'm pretty sure that the 'Alcon' discs are only used on Subaru's... hence no doubt the rather high price.....testing and development still had to be done....

Chelspeed , whats your problem ? told lies ? WTF's that about , search a bit more on me and you will see I work about 100 yds from Ian , and have fitted a few of his kits , so yes I will praise them to those asking , same as you do the same about BGD , I was answering a question asked.excuse me for forgeting to mention that BG did make a set once for someone
Bigbrakes , you mentioning about getting what you pay for , the discs used in Ian's discs and bells are AP's as he doesn't make a 330mm disc , cant really get a better known name than these.
Olly , Not many offer a copy of this set up as the market isn't big , you will only get the smaller companies offering smaller batches for them , you could ask any engineering company to make you bells to suit some 330mm discs, I guess someone not setup to make them would end up charging more for them

IIRC the Alcon one piece replacement disks are approx £180 a side- whis is not unreasonable in my mind- from subaru dealers. They are readily available.
By comparison 330x28 AP rotors (not including the bells) are circa £170 plus vat a side.
I'm not sure what kind of price Ian charges but they use AP rotors as mentioned earlier. I'm guessing he's making his own bells so they will be excellent as well and made to suit the rotor. As mentioned above avoid drilled rotors as they WILL crack sooner rather than later.
