Default Michelin Pilot Sport 2 - Extra Load Needed

Seem to recall reading that Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Extra Load needed to be specified instead of the normal load rated tyres but looking at the Michelin website the normal load tyre (215/45 17) seems to have the same load index as the original equipment Bridgestone (2004 WRX).

Anyone know whether they should be extra load?

Thanks

I got a set of these for my MY05 STI last month.
Asked about the extra load and was told I didn't need it.
They said the XL was for things like people carriers.

They are superb tyres though.

Thanks Shaun.

Now I Know what to order - no need to complicate things with specifying extra load etc

How do you rate the PS2s in terms of handling and steering characteristics?

I got PS2's extra load. Was told because I went from 215/45/17 to 225/40/18 I would be wise to get the Extra Load to cope with a lower than factory profile. They are more squidgy than the bridgestones too interms of side wall so I thought it made sense. As a tyre they are FANTASTIC !!!

You def need the extra load ones mate. best road tyre imho by far, in the wet & dry . The extra load gives you stiffer side walls so you get less tyre roll on the rim. Costco do them at a very good price as well

Got the PS2 XL on my car too in 225/40/18. Been on almost a year now and can't fault them at all. Definately would put same on again although they are still like new on the back and stacks of tread left on the front. A much better tyre than the Toyo's which were already fitted to my wheels when I bought them.

Andy.

Second that as that's where I will be going for my next set. The ones I've got fitted now were a one off and too good to turn down.

Thanks for all the info.

PS2s it will definately be. Sound as if the stiff sidewall of the extra load tightens up handling a bit.

Dunno about 17's so call & ask but 18's were £127 inc vat fitted. They also have 25% off days from time to time (or so I believe) so 4 tyres for the price of 3

OK, seems like everyone else needs the XL tyre. I didn't get them because I was told I didn't need them. Plus the load rating is more than sufficient according to what I've read.

Anyway.
These went on immediately after a set of RE070's.
OK, I noticed the sidewall roll after I first got them on. But to be honest I don't notice it anymore?

Grip is seriously good in damp/greasy/wet conditions.
Dry grip I'd say is just as good as the RE070's.

Very pleased with the tyres so far, although I'd probably question how long they'll last though.

Time will tell.

Just got quoted £111 per tyre including fitting for 215/45/17 at CostCo today but I wasn't aware of the XL so this price is probably for the standard model.

Extra loads are used only on the 18" size cos of the low profile, not needed on the 17".
17" 91 loads are fine for a new age sti.
