Different profiles front to rear

Different profiles front to rear
I trashed a tyre on track at the weekend and a mate has a couple of the same make but with a different profile. As a WRX doesn't have the centre diff is it OK to have different profiles front to rear? The car is currently on 215/45/17 and the possible replacements will be 215/40/17. I have worked out that the profile will be 10.8mm (0.4") smaller.
Any help appreciated.
