Default caliper piston removal?

got some 4 pots that need to be cleaned up a little
a couple of the pistons seem to be seized solid whats the best way to remove these(calipers are not on the car and wont be until sorted so i cant use the brake pedal to push the pistons out)
any ideas as to how much for new pistons?

You can get new seals from Subaru for about £25 i think. I asked if they supplied the pistons and they said no. Some people on here use a footpump to apply pressure, i used compressed air. Make sure all the pistons other than the one you are trying to get out are secured other wise they will pop out. I pushed the stuck piston in and out as far as it would go and used penetrating fluid. Mine was very badly stuck in and i had to carefully use a screwdriver in the groove to help it out (not recomended as they are easily damaged this way. Be carefull as they pop out very quickly when they do finally pop out. I think Grahame Goode refurbish callipers.

Hope this helps

take the pads out of the calipers , and with the brake hose still connected pump the pedal to get the pistons out , maybe put something thin between the pistons and discs so the pistons dont come right out the calipers , oncw they are all out , remove the calipers off the car and then strip them , you will find the pistons will come out easy

seeing as you have the seal kit, i guess you can also split the piston into the two halves..... that in itself would make access easier.... then you'll need to put something inside the piston... (kind of) and pull it out....try not to grip the outside of it though.. cos obviously thats the important bit.....

yeah its just finding something to fit inside the piston to grip it
i was thinking if im to change the seals anyway is there anything i could put on the pistons to lets say rot the old seal so the piston is easier to remove
or is it a case of persisting with pulling it

YOu may be able to remove the dust seal, that might help slightly, but it's pretty much gonna be a struggle to get them out if they're that tight..... what about a small nut and bolt in the piston, then undo the nut so that it's tight inside the piston, then 'maybe' you could pull on that.....

If you're not bothered about damaging the piston.... have you tried to grip what's sticking out of the caliper in a vice.... or big 'plumber' type grips...??

Did you get anywhere with this? I've got the same job to do next week.
Have got a couple of new pistons and a seal kit so i'm ready to go but I know at least 2 pistons are completely seized.

Ok, for future searches - I managed to remove my stuck pistons by splitting the calipers and lightly tapping the piston in then levering out using the lip on the piston and a couple of screwdrivers.
I kept doing this bit by bit using easing oil (Freeway) each time.
Eventually the stuck pistons will come free and once past the rusted lip will slide out easily.
Tried gripping in a vice but all you end up doing is crushing the soft top lip of the piston.

Compressed air is the best way if the calipers aren't on the car. Won't damage the pistons that way and no need to split the calipers.

Tried that Bob, wasn't man enough to move the seized pistons as they had rusted in place.

Wink

The only way I could remove the 2 pistons that were totally stuck on my callipers, was to put them back on the car, bleed the system and pump them out using the hydraulics, even had to have the engine running to get the servo operating, 2 callipers full weekend, it's not difficult just time consuming.
Make sure you have plenty of brake fluid, and make up some jig to hold the other pistons back.
