Default soft brakes

Iv just bought a 1997 impreza wrx import, it has abs, now when i come to apply brakes and stop there not as instant as my last scoob without abs.

If i brake hard the pedal feels softer than it should, the car does stop but not as efficiant as it should.

Any ideas what problem could be??

Iv not looked at brake pads or anything yet only brake fluid level.

change the brake fluid to start with. Its pretty cheap and can make a difference. Do you know what pads its got? Pad change is next thing to do - Pagids are good. Next would be braided hoses all round. That lot will be about £250 for all of the hoses, pads and fluid.

When was the fluid last changed? Change and ensure the system is fully bled. dot5.1/silcone based brake fluids can give a softer pedal feel too, so only use it you have problems with dot 4 getting too hot.

Also, heavily grooved and worn discs can knock the pads back, increasing pedal travel and spongyness.
