I've got Toyo Snowprox M+S tyres for winter use.
Not bad but can't compare to others, heard Michelin Alpins, or something, are very good.

I've only used Michelin DRICE, but I have no complaints. The DRICE and replacement X-ICE tyres are only available in Japan. I think the nearest equivalent you can get in the UK is Michelin Alpin Pilot II (the Alpin Mk II offers greater performance than the still available Alpin I, so if you get quotes for Michelin, double check which they are offering you).

Another shout for Nokian WR sports. I have them in 18’s and they are cheap as chips really. You will not believe the capability of the car with them fitted.

Had some Nokian WRs on about 2 weeks or so. Still getting used to them. They feel very different to a summer tyre, quite soft ride and slightly indirect feel, probably due to the tread moving around a lot more, but seem to be pretty good on untreated icy roads (followed by a friend last night who said it was very slippery, I didn't notice, though we did pass a car freshly ditched on the way) though nothing more testing so far.
I would say that when I first drove on them they were unbelievably slippy, scarily so in fact, which took about 50 miles or more to go. Reckon it must have been the releasing agent stuff still on them as they felt quite 'oily' to touch unused. Never experienced new tyres feeling as bad as this before. They span up easily on dry tarmac with normal starting power after fitting and felt like they had almost zero grip. I tested them on pulling out and did a massive power-slide without even trying! Did a couple of full-blast starts to burn it off which seemed to work!
If you fit them, just be very, very careful for the first few miles!
After a few hundred miles I'm beginning to trust them more and getting used to the difference. They're V-rated and very quiet (just make a faint sssh-ing noise on damp patches), so they're fine on motorways.
On twisty stuff they seem to understeer a little when you push a bit, then dig in as you load them up in more under cornering...probably the tread flexing first I guess.
I'm not too worried about sacrificing dry grip or ultimate performance at this time of year, I just want to stay on the road when it drops below freezing and know that if we get anything worse I'll probably be able to get home.
It's cold when I drive to work and it's cold when I go home, so it makes sense to me.

Can actually brake now and the car seems sure footed. Obviously don't have the sharpness of the OE Bridgestone RE070 but dont fancy them much in the snow!!!!!!!!!!!
