Default thinking of changing your standard discs and pads yourself?

its easy!

for a MY03 WRX youll need

14mm, 17mm, 19mm sockets
cheater bar
ratchet
long thin punch
long nose pliers
hammer
piston separater
brake cleaner
rags
trolley jack and axle stand

a pad kit and 4 discs cost you £400 from the dealership and will take about an hour to do.

loosen off the nuts while the car is down and the handbrake is on
jack up the front, put axle stands under
remove front wheels
turn steering full lock one way so its easy to get to the caliper
pull out retaining wire from caliper
punch out pins
slide out pads and shims
lay it all out how it came out
undo two 17mm bolts that hold the caliper on and lift caliper out the way
pull disc off
clean **** off hub and caliper
clean grease off new disc
fit disc
refit caliper
push pistons back
lay out and grease up the new pads and shims
slide pads in and then pins and clips, then put new retaining clip back on
fit wheel
do the other front one (turn the wheels the other way)
then to the back
jack back up
axle stands
chock front wheels
remove rear wheels
take handbrake off
pull out retaining wire from caliper
punch out pins
slide out pads and shims
lay it all out how it came out
undo two 14mm bolts that hold the caliper on and lift caliper out the way
pull disc off
clean **** off hub and caliper
clean grease off new disc
fit disc
refit caliper
push pistons back
lay out and grease up the new pads and shims
fit shims in caliper top and bottom
slide pads in and then pins and clips, then put new retaining clip back on
fit wheel
do other side
lower car
handbrake back on
torque up nuts
check brake fluid level
check ****
test drive
smile that youve saved yourself a few £££

ta da!

Unhappy Do you normally change pads and disks together??

I've got my unmodified 2003 WRX in for its service today and they want to change both the pads and the disks together. My MK1 Scooby did 75,000 miles on the factory fitted disks (not pads of course) so I was a little surprised that they claim they need changing. I wondered if they have changed the pad material to make this so on the MKIII? I changed the tyres only 200 miles ago (Bridgstone original tyres did 30,000 miles) and looked at the disks then - they looked fine, so am surprised that the disks should only last as long as one set of tyres plus I dont trust my local garage as they have a history of changing things that dont need to be changed!!

They were talking about £330 for the pads and disks including fitting however...

Check the disks and pads yourself.

Disks have a minimum thickness at which point they need to be changed, and most places will change the pads as well as disks.

When you say 'grease the pads' what exactly do you mean?
