What are the biggest discs that would fit behind the standard 16" wheels on my classic 98, at the moment I think they are 277mm with 2 pot calipers, they need changing but I dont know whether to go for the standard discs and pads or buy bigger discs and later upgrade to the 4 pot calipers....if I did buy the bigger discs would the 2 pot still fit them ok until I could afford a 4 pot conversion...

A bigger disc wouldn't fit within the standard 2 pot caliper. You could perhaps fit a mounting bracket to move the caliper further out from the centre of the wheel. If you want bigger brakes you would be better fitting the 4 pots and the disc made for 4 pots both at the same time.
