Default Best tyres for road use??

Hi there

I am in the market for 4 x brand new tyres for the 3000GT (4x4 / 350BHP).

I basically want the best tyres for grip and long lasting.

The size is 235/17. Profile can be between 40-50!

Car has been making a low audible whirring noise when in motion. About 2/3 months ago the car had a brand new drivers rear fitted as it was illegal. So the car now has 4 x Pirelli PZERO Asymetric all round, except three approx 3-4mm tread on them and a new one.
Well just been informed by a very good m8 who is a knowledgable mechanic that this is something you don't do with any 4x4 if you change a tyre you change them all especially when more that a couple of mm difference in tread depth.
As changing just one will be causing the viscious couplings to scream and will eventually cause massive damage to the drivetrain. Not impressed by the so-called GTO specialist who just never warned me off this when fitting one new tyre.

So anyway I have two options at hand to me.......
1. Get 4 brand new tyres of 235/17 with a profile of 40-50, but which are the best? Am I right to think Goodyear F1 is best bet? If so can I have the exact manufacturers code so I know what too order. I get tyres trade so tell me the best, price is irrelevant.
2. Been offered a set of 18" OZ Super Leggara's fitted with brand new 225/18/40 Dunlop SP9000 tyres for £750, would this be a good buy. Just confused as to why fitted with only 225 width tyres......though he nows say 235....so double checking....

Let the advice follow please and lets hope I've caught this in time before my diff/gear box needs some serious cash throwing at it.......

P.S. I am asking here as obviously Scoobs are 4x4 like my car and this is a busy forum.

Hello Mate,

The favoured tyres for most of the guys on here are from the following:

Eagle F1 GSD3 - awesome grip in wet and dry and reasonably long lasting. (have these on a P1).

Toyo Proxy T1S - Quite a soft compund - awsome dry grip - not convinced in the wet - don't last that long as are quite soft. (have these on a Pug)

Bridgestone S03 - Heard these are superb, but never used them myself.

Check out "Elite" website (enter Elite and Rainham into google) for some prices - they seem to be the cheapest I've found - and certainly a good start for prices.

As for the low audible whiring sound you can hear, the best way to sort that will be to get a louder exhaust!

I run 18s on the P1 and 16s on the Pug and don't have any reverberation noise from the wheels - can't really advise on the 17s. I take it you've checked that the wheel bearings aren't knackered - as this could also be the cause for the whirring.

Hope the above is of some use.

Cheers!

p.s. PZero came as standard on the P1 - And I don't know of anyone who prefers it to any of the three I've mentioned above (preparing myself for an influx of disagreement!!!!!).

'The size is 235/17. Profile can be between 40-50!'

This will change the rolling radius of the tyre and your speedo will be inaccurate. Not sure which way though!

I agree..the p-zeros are very average. My P1 is sat on them at the mo but plans are in progress for a set of 4 T1R's.
