front brake calipers 4 or 2 pot
Hi ive just picked up my 99 import wrx wagon on saturday and so far im hugely impressed with it,but im confused about weather the front brake calipers are indeed the correct ones fitted to the car...acording to the chassis code its a 2000 model year car rgistered late 99 and i think therefore should be fitted with 4 pot front brakes...but they appear to me to be 2 pot types with the pistons only on one side and the caliper body sliding against the action of these....should my car have 2 pistons either side as i think the 4 pot set up is like?...im a little confused as to why i dont seem to have the later type brakes fitted to what is a late type classic

4-pot brakes were introduced after 97 so your car should have the 4-pot calipers as standard.
You should be able to see the subaru logo on the side of each caliper.
Hope this helps!

The wrx import regardless of year will have 2pot calipers on the front, my brother has a my00 wrx type ra and that has the 2pots up front. the discs are the same size as the 4pots so you wont need to change them, unless you want to try some uprated discs. the size of the discs is 294mm. hope that helps.

Banny your slightly mistaken there......................the 5door may have the std 2pots fitted (although i'm sure the run-out cars should have 4pots!!)
ALL import saloon cars after about 97 will have the 4pots fitted, and even the 99-00 UK cars have them...............
the disc size for 2pots is 277mm and 4pots are 294mm........................hope this helps

Ok so from the above post it seems my car slippped through the net and had the 2 pot front brakes fitted mmmm .... i actually thought the brakes were ok on the drive home from picking the car up but as im new to it i obviously didnt push it too much so id like to upgrade to the later 4 pots as they do seem to be a worthwhile addition.....whats the best route to do this? would i be able to source a set from a breakers or would they all be snapped up by earlier impreza owners wishing to upgrade...and if i could get some how much is this conversion?any other suggestions gratefully received

My friend has MY00 wrx import, my brother has MY00 wrx type ra and seen various post 97 import wrx's with the same setup, personally i have a 97 sti v3 and that has the 4pot calipers. you are correct about the uk cars from 99 onwards having the 4pots. from what i can gather all the STI's from 97 onwards have the 4 pot calipers not the standard wrx's. The cheapest place to get the 4 pot subaru calipers is ebay.

Rigga,
I actually did the upgrade from 2-pot to 4-pot calipers and 294mm discs last month and it's worth every penny. I bought the calipers fully reconditioned and painted black from API engines http://www.apiengines.com/index3.php
The cost for the calipers was just above 400 pounds including vat and delivery.
I am sure you can source a pair of calipers cheaper but I do not think they will be reconditioned. I personally went that route in order not to have any problems in the future.
Give API a call and I am sure they will have some in stock!
