Default Newbie advice needed - scam or truth ?

I have just rang three different Quickfits to enquire about prices for some new front tyres on my 2003 WRX and two of the three stated that the rears had to have at least three milimeters above the legal limit or: One garge said it would blow the gearbox - the other said I had to have two milimeters above the legal limit or I would blown the diff !

Is this a scam or is ther some truth in this

There is some documented concern over running tyres with more than 4mm tread difference front to back, as it can put strain on the centre differential. best way to combat this is to swap tyres front to rear at 6 monthly intervals to keep wear even.

6 monthly intervals to keep wear even
6 months! I've do mine every 1 month
It's stopped my fronts being bald, while my rears still had loads of tread left. Now they are both worn the same.

Relax - the Centre diff will take care of the tiny rotational difference - they're talking bollocks!

Unless you have a Dccd 'box, then you'll have a viscous centre diff so it won't be a problem other than you'll have baldies at one end which can be fun

The guys who sell you the tyres will always try and make the sale. The car can operate with one worn set, one normal otherwise IM would have a raft of warrenty claims to deal with.

But if it was me i would get a new pair
