Default 16" wheels on a WRX for winter

I live in the sticks (up a lane, then an unmade track) and wondered if it would be a good idea to fit winter wheels/tyres to a 2003/4 WRX (not yet....in Oct/Nov)?

would it then handle like a bar of soap on ordinary roads?

Cheers

You could fit them as long as you get a higher profile to bring the rolling radius back to that of the 17's or the speedo will be out etc. You'd have to check whether this fitment was available. Also, you might be limited in speed / load ratings so don't expect them to handle like standard tyres on normal roads (i.e. not snowy ones).

The group N scoobs seem to run 15" or 16" tyres with what look to be around 80 profile for the forest / gravel stages. Smaller diameter tyres shouls also mean narrower tyres which are better in snow (look at those on the Sweden WRC.)

Might not be ideal sticking tyres on that early - keep an eye on the forecasts and it's probably a better idea having a spare set of rims (even steelies if available as cheaper to get / less costly to replace if curbed ) with the M&S tyres on rather than swapping them over on the alloys at little notice.

I kept my OE alloys with the original tyres on when I changed wheels just in case but I've got through two winters OK so far (fingers crossed)

They do reduce grip on warm dry roads and steering responce but what you have to decide is, if that is a price you are willing to pay for the safety in cold wet crappy condidtions.
I personally run Y2000 16" rims with Vredestein Wintrac 205x55xR16VXL on my 03WRX and they are very, very good. I went for these as thay have a thicker tyre wall than most so to help turn in ect. I have used these tyres alot befor in Europe and found them to be very good. But from previous use I can recommend Pirelli Snowsport and Goodyear also.

If you do a search you should find previous threads on this subject.

I use Toyo Snowprox 205/45/17 for winter use on my MY99 on some cheap 17's.
Great tyre and have me to work and back in some appalling conditions, stick the Speedlines back on about April time with T1-S

I have 5 x16inch Alloys going cheap if you want (4 gold & 1 silver)
Only want £100 if of interest. The tyres are pretty shot but sounds like
you would be changing them anyway.
