Question replacement disc time - TSL or Godspeed

Having run TSL GrpN Front discs (think they are 295mm) for ~18 months, the discs and pads need replacing - (Calipers are std 4 pots from an 00, braided lines, 5.1 fluid, currently on DS2500)s

I've been happy with them...but...

As I'm spending the cash, thought I'd take a look at an upgrade...

With the 18"s I'm running (see below) how would the godspeed 335 kit compare to another set of TSL Grp N s ? (and would they fit ?)

I'd take grooved in either and I'm aware that the TSLs are half the price....

Thanks,

Mark

Also, what's the kit like to fit - Obviously I wouldn't need to bleed the brakes if I just change the discs and pads....

Hi Mark

I've been running the TSL GroupN+ discs with DS2500 pads on the front of mine for approx 18 months too. Not impressed to be honest. Discs have had heat cracks in them for about the last 6 months and are about to be binned.

Mine are the Brembo discs that TSL have grooved (elipse).

Just the OE parts - performance was improved but, as I'm not particularly hard on my brakes, I'm not exactly impressed with all the cracks.

I have not tried Group n discs, so therefore cannot comment on them, however, I am the very happy owner of the 335 kit from Ian Godney, they're excellent!!!
Fitting is not difficult, you would need to bleed the sytem, cos you have to put a spacer in the caliper, also a thread needs tapping into the hub, not hard, but you need the tap, or, Ian can fit the kit for you at a very reasonable cost.

Pretty sure you would have no problems on that front - Ian specifies at least 17" I think, with the 335mm discs.

Ive got the grooved ones with DS2500s - can't fault them so far, much better than the standard set up I had before, and look much better of course.

here's a pic of mine under some 18" P1 wheels, just for the sake of it.

The Godspeeds are far better than Group N discs simply because of the increased diameter disc and additional pad surface.

Also, being a seperate bell/disc design they cope better with heat and replacement discs are pretty reasonable.

The only negative thing I've found is the ferodo DS2500 pads can leave uneven deposits on the larger discs. This can either lead to vibration under very heavy use or some squealing at low speeds.

I had a blast coming back along the A85 in Scotland and after 60-miles of real heavy braking the brakes groaned and vibrated towards the end of the drive. Once on the motorway and enough time for the brakes to cool down, the noise and vibration had stopped, although the squealed a little when pulling up at junctions and parking the car i.e. < 5mph. I'm thinking this was due to overheating the pads.

Some others have experienced similar with these pads and even on AP kits, so I think it's more the pad material on the large discs than anything else.

After John Felsteads testing of the new EBC pads, I think I'll give them a try after I'm back from holiday.

interesting - I've been running ds2500s on the TSL disks for a year and had no probs, but obviously smaller disks -

however, I recently replaced the rear disks with grooved (the old ones were shot and the pads worn) and used mintex pads -

Now, at any speed under 50 the rears sing ! - The only way of stopping it is to get some heat into the rear pads and it goes away for a while...

Due to this, I'll be avoiding the Mintex pads - but it seems quite a few people get squeals with the larger disks and ferodos..

Maybe I'll look into the EBCs

Yeah, I think it's just the pads can't cope with the extra heat generated from the larger discs. I had this problem and didn't realise at the time until I spotted John Felsteads post on the 22b BBS. He noticed the same vibration using the DS2500 pads on his large AP kit.

The squealing on mine is very, very slight. I mean it's like 2mph just before you physically come to a stop. Day-to-day driving and they don't make any noise.

I couple of huge stops seems to clean them up though with the grooved discs.

If it wasn't for the vibration, I'd stick with them. Your forearms ache after 30mins of hard braking.

Seems that the EBC Red Ceramics are the ones to go for - Any idea where to source them ? - or does Ian G. supply ?

Ian should be able to get hold of these. Basically the pad shape is from an old Jaguar XJS. It has the same layout as the Subaru pad, but just wider so that it copes with the larger discs.

All Ian has to do with the std Jag part is modify the holes for the caliper pins and possibly file the pad edges to fit better in the Subaru caliper. If you buy from Ian, he does these mods.

I'm pretty sure people have posted the part#'s for the Jag pads before. If you knew the part# (or exact model/year of Jag), then you could buy them anywhere - EBC direct or AS Performance would be other options.

I'd buy from Ian, but he can be hell to get hold of.

Right, been digging around and found the following info:-

Ferodo DS2500 part# FCP817H (listed as FDS817 on Ferodo website)

EBC Greenstuff part# DP2262 or Redstuff part# DP3262 - from EBC Website

There's no measurements on the Ferodo part, so I can't say they are one in the same, but they are both for Jag XJS (75-91) and look identical

It would be good to know the Mintex pad part#'s to give everyone as much info as possible.

Mark,

I've PM'd you, but Ian's been in touch with me and said he has replied to your e-mails and also replied to questions raised in this thread.

Oh and the part# for Mintex is MGB 585 - thanks Ian.

Hi Guys, after having some work done on my car I decided the brakes were next.... Having heard so much about AP and others was well up for some of those, then the wifey slammed her purse shut so decided the Godspeed kit was the one for me and having heard how hard Ian is to get hold was not looking forward to the amount of time i may have to wait.

Phoned Ian on tuesday at 5.30ish, weds morning Ian called back I paid via bank transfer and kit is being dispatched today. Having read some of the reviews on here I am now really looking forward to bunging them on at the weekend. I've gone for the DS2500 so here's looking at safer stopping distances. The standard setup has now got so bad that you cant even lock the wheels. Or is this a mechanical version of ABS Subaru failed to tell me about.

Having read some of the experiences others have had with Godspeed, I was'nt overly sure what next day delivery would really mean. Still, being in no rush and heard many good reviews of the godspeed kit that was to be the one.

Spoke to Ian on tuesday he said he had the kits in stock, told me I could pay direct into his bank account next day and he'd send kit out straight away for next day delivery.

Did'nt get to the bank till nearly 4pm weds and transfered money over the counter.

Confirmed money was done and he'd send kit out next morning as I'd missed the post.

Thursday 9.am Ian called to confirm wether I wanted grooved or grooved & drilled. He then sent out in post.

Fri 4pm Ian called to see if I had received package. I said no not yet no sign of him. Ian then said he'd call couriers to find out where it was. Result was they arsed up with address and took it back to depot, Ian basically persuaded them to get one of their drivers to drop it off on his way home some 30 miles out of his way.

Top draw service Ian, wish all companies would treat next day delivery with the same respect.
