Question

Thanks to LizzyWhiz, I now a set of spare wheels.

Although I haven't inspected them in detail, I would like to get them refurbished and coloured anthracite (saves having to wash the wheels then )

Is power coating different from painting? If so, is coating better than painting or vice versa? Last thing I want is to kerb them and end up with gold showing through.

Any recommendations for outfits in the Midlands area I could drop them into or possibly other places that might collect / deliver?

TIA,

ChrisB.

powder coating is different to painting they will shot blast the rims to remove the paint and provide a key, they then spray a powder on the rims and bake them to melt the powder in to a seamless coat and cure it.
not certain but i would say powder coating is more durable them painting thats why its used in industry so much.

I got mine powder coated at LSN in Castleford, West Yorkshire 01977 604461 and one other scooby owner has had them done there as well. cost £100 for 4 wheels + £20 to take off and put back on the tyres. they do anthracite as well

I got my old car wheels done at mss blast cleaning specialists in morley... leeds... think it was about 150 or 170.. but when I went to pick them up they wouldnt let me have them back as they werent happy with the finish... I couldnt see anything wrong with them, just make sure who ever fits your tyres is carefull, and uses a plastic foot on their machine... I would say it is better finish than paint... had mine with no probs for over a year...

I've just had some bits and pieces from my Caterham powder coated by Triple S in Shipley, great job. They originally specialised in motorbike frames/wheels etc but have now started refirbishing car alloys as well. They will either two pack paint them, powder coat them or polyurathane coat them. The latter looks a superb finish and I believe they will match any colour. The whole wheel is shot blasted before starting so no need to worry about the original colour showing through. My Caterham wheels will be going in for the poly treatment once winter arrives, about £35 a corner, give them a ring, oh and quote Classic bikes for a 10% discount.

I own a sandblasting / wheel refurb business namely MSS in Morley.

Wheel refrub's.
The type of finish obtained can either be wet spray (painting) or powder coating. The latter involves the stripping of the old powder coating from the wheel, sand blasting to remove the remains of the paint if need be, with a final Bead Blasting, this a finer media (stuff that goes through the nozzle)to give a good surface profile and ultimatly a good finish. The wheel is then preheated to about 70 - 100 deg c to aid the electrostatic bonding of the powder to the wheel. We currently do a three coat system were a powder primer is put on first then the finishing powder (we have various colours including anthracite ) is put on the wheel. This is then finally covered with a lacquer to give good durability and a nice finish. We've done about 3 sets of Scooby wheels in the last 3 weeks, 2 sets of Ferrari, 3 sets of jags, endless sets of ford wheels, a Scooby SVX etc.. etc... the list never ends

As a rule of thumb powder coating is the "norm" for wheel refurb's but we can wet spray. However powder coating is alot more resilient to the weather / ware and tare / minor mishaps...

Have to totally recommend above.. as they sorted me out and also matched and fixed a wheel when a mate scuffed it... I Am going back soon to see if they will powder coat some bits of metal and amps for my new boot install.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the recommendations folks.

MSS - excellent information on how the process is done - if you were closer to me, I'd be straight round.

I asked one of the guys I share an office with today if he knew anywhere. Turns out his brother has just had a wheel done & was most impressed. It's local place about 10 minutes from work so I'm dropping the wheels in on Friday.

I'll take some before and after photo's.

Cheers,

ChrisB.
