Ok...Don't laugh. Someone once told me that you have to change all four tyres at once when they are worn....Is this true?

ie. If you do a track day and ruin your front tyres, can you replace them only?

Cheers, Steve.

In short no.
But you must do at least both tyres on one axle or the other, due to diif wind up or something.

A lot of people change all four tyres at once because it makes the handling more predictable. This is particularly a problem if you have grippy fronts and worn rears as snap-oversteer isn't the most fun thing to experience in the wet!

As pointed out, you should always change both tyres on the same axle, mainly because if you don't, you end up with a car that behaves differently when you turn left or right.

Rather than diff wind-up with one new and one (very) old tyre on the same axle, you would potentially wear out the diff sooner because the two wheels would be continually rotating at different speeds when driving in a straight line.
