Track day tyres - slicks or not
I'm looking for slicks too, as my track day antics demolish my standard & expensive SO2's.
Tyres Northampton are offering 17" Pirelli's for £105 ea
They say you'll get a good 4/5track days out of those. Or try

I need some tyres for track days to go on my 17" p1 wheels, obviously don't want to spend the earth as they are purely for track use.
Not convinced about using slicks with standard suspension (albeit with Eibachs).
what do others use? Any recommendations?
cheers,
greg

I've just bought some of those slicks from Mark
although I bought them with wheels too. I'm next out on 18th Aug at Croft with them, hoping to have the suspension done but doubt I will by then. I put AP 4 pots on my car and decided that to make good use of these i'd have to run slicks and uprated suspension
I'll be able to pass comment on slicks soon, if you want to come along to Croft (not sure where you live) i'll take you out so you can feel for yourself if its worth the extra.

Skippy,
Live nr Leeds, but am in Cornwall so can't make Croft!
One downside I've just thought of wrt slicks is the occasional trackday ie Trax 2000 didn't allow them!
cheers,
greg
PS done croft twice this year, great circuit

Its always a bit of a worry because you never know what will be banned next. I was working on 4 trackdays which does not include Trax, so i'll be finished with the tyre's this year.
Second time at Croft for me too, off on my travels later in the year, Donno, Cadwell and Brands

The slicks i've just bought have little bits taken out around the tyre, these are three abreast across the tyre and appear to go down just to the start of the cord. I guess these are indicators, but for this very reason i bought new one's. Didn't want to spend £100-£200 on second hand slicks and find them knackered.

I was thinking of this for a track day but in the end opted for good second hand road tyres because.............................
What if it rains, then youve got to put the originals on and trash them(but not so much i suppose)?

I found tyre wear at Croft in the rain not a problem. I had bought second hand wheels and tyre's with a few mill on them to use in the dry, appeared to be no noticable wear with these in the wet.
The problem with slicks and your road tyre's is if it starts to dry out you'll have to make a decision to swap, what if its wet but a dry line appearing. I decided for a set of part worn's for this, kinda an intermediate. One problem is I have to cart 8 wheels, jack etc around with me, but as I already decided to take two cars to the track (handy company estate) it'll just be a pain swapping them.
