Great news! Following debate in another thread on track day tyres, I phoned Yokohama to check availability of their AO38-R tyre, as fitted to the Lotus 340R. This tyre is soft and grippy, has a tread pattern like a hand-cut slick so should wear well, is safe in the wet and also road legal! Check it out on

Do you have Falken Azenis over there? They are an excellent choice for road/track tyre. They really take a lot of punishment well.
They are available in 205/50/16 and 215/45/17. Not the ideal 40 profile in the 17" fitment but they fit fine.
Over here they are around $200 per corner at discount tyre places (66 UK pounds).
Regards,
David

Hi peeps. Well, as usual all is not quite what it seems...
The bad news is that the A038-R is NOT available in anything other than 12in. Yoko UK were misinformed.
But there's a quite a lot of good news. Scoob friendly sizes of Yoko's A032-R competition spec tyre are available. It's the same tyre as the AO38-R but with a few more grooves. A superb all-weathers track tyre, and road legal. Yoko have or can get 205/50x16 (perfect fit), and 225/45x17 (very tight squeeze!).
More good news is a bargain 230/625x17 full slick which Yoko say will fit an Impreza. That will also be very tight, so check your wheel off-sets.
They have also told me that the AOO6T rally tyre I've mentioned on here before is not suitable for track use.
Yoko have asked me not to post prices here, but the AO32-R is not cheap, whereas the slicks are very competitive.
If you want to know more, call Jim Fullwood at Yokohama on 01908 625653, for guide prices and your nearest Yoko Motorsport dealer.
Richard.

The Falken Azenis is Falken's direct competitor to the A-032R. Main differences to A-032R are:
- Less than 40% of the price of A-032R.
- Comes in 16" & 17" sizes that will fit Impreza.
- Not quite as grippy as A-032R but very very close.

David

Yeah the Falken looks good but it doesn’t come in an exact Scooby 17” size i.e. 215/40/17 or 205/45/17, only 215/45/17. This has 10mm greater rolling radius.
But then again I suppose purely for track work that shouldn’t matter.
Shame about Yoko they’re only losing more business from Scooby owners as they don’t make a decent high performance tyre, like the AVS that fits 17” Scoobies.

Those Falkens look interesting
Stef, I know! But the quoted tyre is 165/60x12 on a 5in rim!

The Stamford tyres review was mostly accurate. The only thing I would disagree with is that I found the Azenis to be quite communicative when they let go. They telegraph their intentions quite well.
The other thing where they really stack up well is how they take track punishment.
Many people over here use the Azenis full time as their road and track tyre, especially the 16" guys as these tyres have very strong sidewalls.
Definitely worth a look!

FWIW- I bought some 032Rs in the 205/50x16 size for track day work last year. I only did 1 day at Cadwell Park and was very impressed- looooaaadddss of grip and took track driving into a new world . I wasn't brave (or skilled) enough to really find the limits so couldn't say how they react when pushed.
As said they aren't cheap (from memory £110/corner?) but seemed a logical choice if like me you don't want to go to full slicks and the stresses that come with them.
They are road legal, but I wouldn't recommend them for permanent road use. They are very noisy compared to standard road tyres (a very annoying whiney noise), are a very soft compound so wear will be very high and the wet weather performance is not good- you'll be all over the place, not the point of 4WD in the wet!! (on the other hand )
George Polley Motorsport in Sussex offered me the best price, if anyone is interested I can dig out their number.
