I've heard horror stories with Pirelli P Zeros but from what I can gather it only seems to affect handling on roads with standing water.

Easy really, Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's are probably the best bet overall. I just had these fitted to a 2nd hand set of 17" WRX wheels. Road noise lower, grip is much better, wear rate is good to, and more importantly the grip in the wet is excellent.
The Bridgestones Potenza RE03's I had on before started to tramline badly, which isnt a nice feeling over rougher surfaces, as the front wheels start to grab on potholes/ruts in the road.
